What Causes Southern California Wildfires?

5/10/2023 (Permalink)

Southern California wildfires are caused by a combination of natural and human factors. Natural causes include lightning strikes, which can ignite dry vegetation, and high winds, which can fan the flames and spread them quickly. Southern California is also prone to drought, which can create tinder-dry conditions that are ideal for wildfires to start and spread.

Human activities such as campfires, fireworks, and discarded cigarettes can also start wildfires. In addition, Southern California is home to many urban areas that are surrounded by wilderness, and the use of power tools or other machinery can inadvertently start fires.

Consequences of Southern California Wildfires

The consequences of Southern California wildfires can be devastating. They can destroy homes, businesses, and other infrastructure, and they can also have a significant impact on the environment. Wildfires can destroy habitats and ecosystems, leaving wildlife without food or shelter. The smoke from wildfires can also have serious health consequences, particularly for people with respiratory issues.

In addition to the immediate impact of wildfires, they can also have long-term effects on the economy and society. Rebuilding after a wildfire can be expensive and time-consuming, and the disruption to businesses and transportation can have a ripple effect throughout the region.

Prevention and Mitigation Measures

There are a variety of measures being taken to prevent and mitigate the impact of Southern California wildfires. One key strategy is to manage the landscape through controlled burns, which can remove excess vegetation and reduce the risk of wildfires. This is particularly important in areas where homes and businesses are close to wildland areas.

Another important strategy is to educate the public about the risks and how to prevent wildfires. This includes promoting safe campfire practices, properly disposing of cigarettes, and avoiding the use of power tools during high-risk periods. Firefighters and other emergency personnel are also working to improve their response times and coordination to more effectively contain wildfires when they do occur.

Finally, there is ongoing research into new technologies and techniques that can help prevent and mitigate the impact of Southern California wildfires. This includes using drones to map and monitor wildfire activity, developing new firefighting tools and equipment, and exploring the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict and prevent wildfires.

Southern California wildfires are a complex and ongoing challenge, but there are many strategies being implemented to prevent and mitigate their impact. From landscape management and public education to technological innovation and improved emergency response, there is much that can be done to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect the people and ecosystems of Southern California.

If your home or business is struck by Southern California wildfires, call SERVPRO of Fontana for an immediate response at (909) 357-4337.

Southern California Peak Wildfire Season Arrives

9/12/2022 (Permalink)

Wildfire burns through Southern California

Despite recent heavy rainfall in Southern California from the remnants of Hurricane Kay, wildfire season is not over yet. Wildfire season in Southern California is known to be May through October, with many experts suggesting wildfire season is now year-round.

While recent downpours may have slowed the spread of our vicious wildfires, they certainly did not stop them. Several wildfires continue to burn across the state with many in central and Southern California.

A common misconception about our wildfires is that the worst time of the season is during the heat of the summer. While we do see many fires during the summer, the peak of our season is typically September and October, which means we are just getting started. Dry winds combine with risk factors to make early-mid fall a dangerous and active time for wildfires, many of which are much stronger than those that occur in the summer months.

Historically, winter has brought an end to fire season thanks to cooler temperatures and rainy weather, however in recent years, fires have spread and left paths of destruction even in December and January.

As Southern Californians, we have all been impacted in some way by these monstrous wildfires. We are local experts who understand the importance of an immediate response and proper techniques to remediate damages caused by the California wildfires. Our team members are highly trained and use only the best equipment to meet the needs of our community.

If you find yourself facing extensive damages from wildfires, smoke, or even water following firefighting efforts, contact us today at (909) 357-4337.

How to Protect your Community from Wildfires

Fire burns through California hillside

As fires continue to spread throughout California, we are reminded of the destructive nature of raging wildfires. Many Californians have lost their homes and many, if not all, of their valuables. The climate in and around Fontana is continuing to get warmer and dryer creating conditions just right for fires to start and spread.

How you can protect your community this wildfire season:

Avoid fires and firepits during outdoor activities. Bonfires and campfires are a fun addition to summer nights, however, they can easily become dangerous without proper care. If your area does not currently have restrictions in place, burn with care. Remember to always properly put out your fire and quickly report any incidents.

Don’t flick or litter burning cigarettes. A tiny spark is enough to start a large dangerous wildfire. Remember to properly burn out cigarettes and be mindful of how you dispose of cigarettes and matches.

Report unattended fires. If at any point you come across an unattended fire large or small, always report it to your local emergency responders. While they may seem small upon discovery, if left unattended they can quickly become a massive, destructive wildfire.

Follow your local guidelines. Although it may seem unfortunate sometimes, each of these fire guidelines has been put in place for a reason - to protect the community and those who live in it. Always follow the ordinances put in place by your local officials regarding fire danger.

Be Prepared. Preparedness is invaluable when it comes to raging Southern California wildfires. Know the steps to take in protecting your family and your most important valuables. If a fire strikes your Fontana home, you need a team of experts you can rely on to clean and restore your property. We are available for 24/7 service. Contact us today.

What causes California Wildfires?

SERVPRO of Fontana responds to Fire Damage in Southern California

In Southern California, wildfire season peaks between July and November. The dry winds, lack of rain, and fall air create the perfect storm for wildfires to thrive.

As we continue through fire season in California, it is important for to know what you can do to help prevent fires and protect your home or business. Throughout 2021, California has faced another dire drought situation, forcing governor Newsom to press a state of emergency in many California counties. This late summer and early fall have continued to create dangerously dry conditions.

As of September 30, 2021 42% of the state of California was facing extreme drought conditions, while 46% was facing exceptional drought conditions. Exceptional is the worst level a drought can reach. Drought combines with rising temperatures and dry wind to evaporate water sources, dry soil, and kill trees and other plantlife. In turn, conditions for wildfires become an elevated risk and precautions must be taken by those who live and work in Southern California.

No two wildfires are the same. They have different sources, speeds, damage levels, and impacts. In Southern California the drought situation combines with other factors to start fires, while the wind contributes to spreading them throughout the dry brush once plants have died and the soil has dried.

The conditions can be right for a wildfire, but an outside factor still has to be the source. Outside factors can come from nature, such as lightning, but most of our fires are results of human error or arsen.

Many of California’s most damaging wildfires have ignited from downed power lines, sparks from car accidents or flat tires, fireworks, cigarettes, and arson. Each of these has been the source of some of the biggest fires in California’s history.

It is important that we listen to state officials and avoid any activities that may create an elevated risk of starting these wildfires that wreak havoc on our communities. If your home or business has been struck by damaging fires this wildfire season, contact us today for an immediate response at (909) 357-4337.

Fire Damage Southern California

Sierra California Fires Report

Amidst a historic drought and unusually high temperatures, the Southern Sierras are a hot spot for unruly wildfires this season. Just last Saturday, the KNP Complex fire in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park burned over 58,200 acres and was only 20% contained.

According to Cassie Adams, public information officer present at the scene of the fire, there were 659 people forced to leave their home with evacuation orders for the communities of: Big Meadows, Weston Meadows and Quail Flat in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, as well as Grant Grove, Wilsonia and Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park.

Not only do wildfires effect the people, economy and businesses nearby, but sadly nature and wildlife. As you can imagine, there is a large concern for the towering, beautiful sequoia trees in those areas as well. Officials say it will require patience and more time to predict the extent of the tree mortality due to these fires.

What you need to know about Fire Damage in Southern California

  • Wildfires create more than surface-level damage
  • Wildfires (and all other fires) can create extensive cosmetic damage to your home or business. This can be extremely upsetting to find your property with destruction. In addition to the surface-level damages, you will also find that your property has extensive damage that may not be so evident to the naked eye.
Following fire damage, your home or business will need immediate repair and require time to restore the structure and integrity of the space. The air quality is not optimal for staff and residents. Smoke and other contaminants will be present in air vents and filtration and create a dangerous circumstance without proper removal techniques.

California Fires 2020: What to prepare during evacuation

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

Amidst pandemic season, Orange County encountered several wildfires. In October alone, there were two recorded wildfires in Silverado and in Blue Ridge which affected massive amounts of land and people.

Silverado Wildfire

As of October 27, 2020 according to The Sun, 13,354 acres of fire with 5% contained was recorded and there were two firefighters critically injured. It has been difficult to contain this casualty because it is wind-driven, and with the gravity of the situation, they forced to evacuate 90,000 Irvine residents because the Sta. Ana winds continues to push flames toward homes. The chief said that 500 firefighters are deployed and they are moving as efficiently as they can in order to contain the fire. Overall, the fire was contained on November 7, 2020 with a good amount of damage to homes and to the area itself.

Blue Ridge Wildfire

Another fire was recorded just on the edge of Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange County engulfing 14,334 acres of land. There are no known cause as to how the fire started but it has been contained pretty much the same time as the Silverado fire.

“We’re dealing with extreme wind and erratic fire behavior, and we have two fires burning simultaneously in the county,” Orange County Fire Capt. Greg Barta said.

Wildfire Plan

Create an evacuation plan with your family and in order to do that, it should include:

  • Emergency meeting location - check for evacuation areas designated by your community.
  • Learn the escape routes inside your house and within your community. Making sure that you have the route all mapped out allows you to be more efficient in times of quick evacuation.
  • Make sure to include your pets and livestock in evacuating.
  • Establish a contact to your loved one and keep them updated on your condition and the casualty.

Also you need to prepare:

  • Always have a fire extinguisher ready at home.
  • Make sure that the family is oriented on how to act during evacuation. Turn off the things that need to be turned off.
  • Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit.
  • Maintain a list of Contact numbers.
  • Make sure to pack all the important documents and secure it with your personal belongings.

And most importantly, make sure that you always listen to the announcement from the fire department. Wildfires are unpredictable. Although in these cases, firefighters are trying to fight it before it can reach any house or any property but if worst comes to worst, do not panic. Keep a level head and keep in mind the things you need to do and move as efficiently as possible.

Why You Should Hire Professionals for Your Fire Damage Repair

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage in Cali

As a homeowner or business owner, there are few things that are worse than being hit by a fire. The damage caused by a flood or other  disasters are less when compared with the damage caused by fires.

With other forms of disasters you can still do some repair, but with a fire the damage could be total destruction, even if you are lucky enough to escape.

Even if the fire that affected you was not excessive, the damage and trouble it would cause can still be substantial.

It's also not as easy task to repair the damage. It presents some complication that make handling it rather difficult.

Why Fire Damage is Difficult to Take Care of

As mentioned, a fire causes some damage particularly tricky to address. It might only burn a portion of a room, but the repair could involve the whole home, office, or business. The smoke might also cause grime to appear on the walls and the ceiling, which could render the entire place a total mess.

Making use of ordinary cleaning methods will not work in removing the damage from the fire and the smoke. Overlooking parts of the house or commercial business which were only partially damaged by the fire can also be dangerous, since you can no longer trust their structural strength.

DIY Fire Damage Repair

Still there are those who insist they can handle the repair of the damage caused by a fire in their homes or business on their own. If you feel confident you can handle it on your own, you will need the skill and knowledge of the professionals like a SERVPRO of Fontana team member.

Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Winter Preparedness

Summer is officially over - as much as we hate to admit it, and winter weather is just around the corner. Colder temperatures pose a variety of challenges for homeowners, and now is the perfect time to start preparing. Learn how to prevent fires this season and ensure you won't run into any fire or water damage.

Here are a few easy tips from SERVPRO of Fontana to winterize your home.

Have your Fireplace Inspected

Those of us who can’t stand cold winter weather can take some solace in the thought of a cozy evening by the hearth. But if it’s been many months since you last used your fireplace, it’s a good idea to inspect it beforehand and ensure that it’s safe to operate.

Check your chimney both inside and out. Shining a flashlight up can illuminate crumbling bricks or mortar, as well as any leaves or other debris that may have collected. You’ll also want to ensure that the flashing on your roof is secure, and that any tree limbs that may have grown too close to the chimney are pruned back. If your roof is difficult to access or if you have safety concerns, call in a professional to carry out the inspection (as well as any necessary repairs).

Clean out your Drain Pipes and Gutters

It’s a smart idea to clean out your gutters and drain pipes at least a couple of times per year, and this is the perfect season to do so.

Your home’s gutters and drainpipes serve an important role - guiding rain and snowmelt off the roof and a safe distance away from the foundation. During autumn, it’s not uncommon for gutters and drainpipes to become clogged, as trees start to shed leaves and twigs. This can cause water to build up and seep into your attic, walls, and/or basement, leading to expensive repairs. An hour or two spent cleaning today can save you a ton of hassle down the road.

Check your Smoke Alarms

How do you handle chilly days and freezing nights? Probably by cranking up the thermostat, boiling up some hot tea or cocoa, and pulling the old space heater out of storage.

Increased use of electrical equipment can lead to a heightened risk of fires during the winter months, so this is a great time to inspect your smoke alarms and ensure that they are working properly. Swapping out the battery periodically is easy enough, but remember that the equipment itself can degrade over time—the U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing your smoke alarms every 10 years or so.

Install a Water Alarm

Many people aren’t even aware that “water alarms” exist, but these little devices serve an important role in any house. They work similarly to a fire alarm, alerting you to the presence of unwanted moisture and giving you the chance to contain a flood before the damage becomes too serious. Install them in the more flood-prone areas of the home, like your basement or attic.

Fit your Entrances with Door Sweeps

Ever notice those little strips of rubber or plastic you’ll sometimes see attached to the bottom edge of a door? Those are called “door sweeps”, and they’re meant to help seal the entrances to your home—against both cold-weather drafts and minor flooding from melting snow or ice. Door sweeps generally cost only a few dollars, and are easy to install in minutes, making them a very cost-effective choice for any home.

Dealing with Fire Damage in Southern California

Fire damage in Fontana, CA

California, especially Southern California, has recently been hit with a number of major fires. These raging wildfires aren’t the first the state has had to deal with, and they likely won’t be the last. Since the beginning of 2018, there have been 4,587 separate fires raging across the state, which is only slightly above the average for the past five years. More than 600,000 acres have been affected. A number of people have been killed in these fires, including civilians and firefighters, and thousands of residential and commercial buildings have burned. In addition to those who have lost their homes, thousands of other residents have had to leave their houses due to the proximity of the fires. Some of these blazes still aren’t contained and continue to threaten people’s homes.

The Dangers of Fire Damage

Even if it doesn’t destroy your home, fire damage can seriously impact your property and your health. Fire damage can weaken the structure of your home, making it more susceptible to damage from earthquakes or other disasters. When firefighters put out the fire, the water from their high pressure water hoses can also cause water damage to your home, leading to mold growth and other issues.

Even if there’s no major structural damage from the fire, you may still have smoke damage. Smoke can cling to carpets and walls, leaving your home with an odor for months. It can discolor paint, flooring, and furniture, make asthma and other breathing conditions worse, and leave everything you own smelling like smoke. It’s not something you can simply live with—it’s something you need to have professionally cleaned.

Lilac Fire San Diego

You might remember the Lilac Fire – one of many wildfires that popped up in Southern California at the end of last year, and one of the largest (with about 4,100 acres burned and 10,000+ people displaced).

After the fire was contained, SERVPRO of Fontana’s team of fire damage restoration professionals spent 5 weeks out in the San Diego area, working on residential fire damage claims. Even after the immediate danger of a wildfire has passed, affected homeowners still need to move quickly in order to clean up any damage from smoke and/or flames and make the home safe to live in once again.

The aftermath of a wildfire can be a really taxing time for homeowners. That's why SERVPRO of Fontana aims to take as much off of your plate as possible. We're available 24/7 and respond immediately – because in emergency situations, any amount of waiting will cause damages (and cleanup costs) to rise exponentially.

What To Do When Wildfires Approach

Climatologists are warning that wildfires may be the new normal in large parts of California. Do you have a readiness plan in place for your household? Ready.gov provides simple guides to help you and your family prepare for disaster events, covering basic wildfire info as well as topics like where to find shelter and which evacuation route to take.

When disaster actually approaches, the safest thing you can do is to evacuate the area with your loved ones: there’s nothing you can do by staying put. Head to the shelter you’ve identified when preparing your readiness plan, and only return to your home when the “all-clear” is given.

If your home suffers fire damage – whether from a wildfire or any other source – professional restoration is your best bet. It’s not safe to live in a house whose structural integrity may have become compromised, nor is it any fun to deal with the smell of smoke caked into your walls and carpets for years on end. Check out our fire damage tips, where we cover the basics of what to do and what not to do after fire and/or smoke events.

SERVPRO of Fontana offers 24/7 service, including all major holidays – because emergencies don’t wait for normal business hours.  For fire damage restoration, storm damage cleanup and other residential or commercial services, call us today at (909) 357-4337.

After a smoke or fire damage, ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting and floors will often need a thorough cleaning. SERVPRO OF FONTANA will pretest to determine the extent of damage, and then use the specific equipment and cleaning products required to clean and protect the different types of surfaces found in your structure. Depending on the amount of soot, SERVPRO may even be able to reduce the cost of recovery by cleaning lighter soot deposits found on some surfaces, eliminating the expense incurred with painting or refinishing.
