5 Water Damage Misconceptions

9/11/2022 (Permalink)

Water floods property

Water damage can strike at any time from a variety of different sources. Many people who find their property facing water damage do not fully understand what it means for their property going forward, and how to fully address the problem before damages worsen.

It’s water, it will dry.

Water is extremely invasive and can seep into areas of your property that are much harder to get to, if not properly taken care of. When you choose not to use professional drying and cleanup services, you are choosing the likely outcome of severe structural damages and extensive mold posing a health hazard.

Once we get rid of the water, everything is normal again!

Unfortunately, once you get rid of the water you are still forced to assess damages to the structure of the property, furniture and belongings, and any new sources of hazard or health hazards throughout the property. Then you must make a plan to sanitize the property and deeply disinfect to make sure you are preventing any other problems from arising.

I can see all of the damage.

Water damage always goes beyond what you see. Water spreads so quickly and easily that it can go into walls and trap moisture creating a conducive environment for mold spores and intense odors.

The smell will go away on its own.

It does not take long at all for mold to begin to grow.  Once this process begins, the odor becomes very difficult to eliminate. Because mold is a type of fungus, it gives off a strong, sometimes unbearable smell. Mold and other strong odors require professional treatment for removal through a dehumidification process and antimicrobial treatment.

It’s okay if cleanup and remediation are delayed

For a number of reasons, an immediate response to property flooding is imperative. At SERVPRO of Fontana, we are “faster to any disaster” with the training and equipment necessary to get your property back at its best as quickly as possible.

Most Common Types of Storm Damages in Southern California

9/11/2022 (Permalink)

Storm rolls in behind home

Storm damage is a common threat that looms over Southern California. Without warning, a severe thunderstorm or heavy rainfall can strike and cause extensive damage to commercial and residential properties in our communities.

Flooding

While we may not see many days of consistent rainfall, we certainly see downpours that strike without warning. Thanks to low-lying areas in and around Fontana, flooding is among the most common disasters for Fontana residents. When heavy rainfall hits, properties flood, and homeowners and business owners scramble to resolve the problem as quickly as possible to avoid the dangers that come with property floods.

Wind

When storms strike Fontana, so do high winds. These high winds are among the most powerful forces of nature and can take down trees, blow around outdoor furniture, break windows and damage the exterior of your property and create a dangerous environment until properly repaired.

Lightning

While lightning is a rare cause of storm damage, it is a culprit! Lightning can strike trees surrounding your property, or even your property sparking fires or causing trees to fall. While these require different action plans for resolution, both require professional assistance for remediation and repairs.

Mudslides

Living in our near hills and mountains makes your property much more susceptible to mudslides following heavy rainfall. When this heavy rainfall hits and moistens the soil, it becomes loose. This loose soil then begins to glide downhill uprooting trees and taking surface-level rocks with it to create a violent and damaging natural disaster.

When your home or business is hit with storm damage of any kind, you need to take action immediately. Our professionals at SERVPRO of Fontana have the experience and equipment necessary to address storm damages at your property.

How to Prepare for Severe Thunderstorms

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Lightning strikes building during severe thunderstorm

Severe thunderstorms can strike at any time without notice. All thunderstorms are dangerous due to the production of lightning, but some can quickly become much more violent with flash flooding, damaging winds, hail, cloud-to-ground lightning, and even the occasional tornado.

When a severe storm is on its way, you are not given much time to prepare. While some precautions should be taken with any thunderstorm, a severe thunderstorm warning suggests a more aggressive storm that needs to be taken seriously.

Dry thunderstorms are unique to our region of the country and cloud-to-ground lightning can spark wildfires. In severe storms that do produce heavy rainfall, we see the dangers of flash flooding.

When a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for Fontana or the surrounding communities, it is important to take action immediately, as you only have a few minutes where it is safe for you to take action.

The first step is to make sure your family has a plan for safety and that any outdoor activities are going to be delayed until the storm passes. If you must go outside to secure anything that may blow away and cause more damage, do so quickly if it is still safe to do so.

If you are outside go into a home or building. If you are stuck outside away from structures, your safest option is to get into any hardtop vehicle until the storm passes.

Lightning is extremely unpredictable and always poses risks to individuals and properties. Take the precautions necessary to lower your risk of storm damage, and if disaster strikes, know that you can count on our professionals at SERVPRO of Fontana to help you make it “Like it never happened.”

Understanding the Different Sources of Water Damage

6/12/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage to homes in Southern California can be caused by a variety of sources.

Water damage can strike unexpectedly from a variety of sources. Often, we associate water damage with homes with heavy rainfall, but this is not the only culprit when it comes to homes flooding in or near Fontana, California. While we do see water damage resulting from heavy rainfall in southern California, it is very important to understand the variety of sources from which water damage can arise.

Faucet Overflow

One of the more common causes of water damage to homes is faucet overflow. Leaving a faucet unattended and forgetting about it is not as uncommon as one might think. Especially if you have pets at home. We all know cats love to play with dripping water in the sink.

But once a sink or bathtub is left running, it may quickly fill with water and overflow without noticing until it is too late. Sometimes, neglect isn’t even an issue - faulty drains can catch a homeowner by surprise when leaving a sink that is unable to properly drain, even for a short period of time.

Malfunctioning Appliances

Southern California homes have a variety of appliances that contain, hold, or distribute water. Each of these appliances is trusted to do a job without total supervision. Dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators can leak and toilets can overflow without warning. Water heaters are also a common culprit for water damage. With these as the source of home water damage, the water quickly spreads throughout the property leaking into crevices and lower levels of the property, also promoting conditions for mold growth.

Drains Not Working Properly

When your home's external drainage system or gutter system is not functioning at its best, you may find interior and exterior flooding on your property seeping in through the ground level from the outside. You may also find that the water is entering through the roof, which can damage ceilings and walls while creating dangerous conditions. When water damage is coming from the roof, proper steps for roofing damage repair will likely also be necessary.

Whether your property is struck with water damage from rainfall or internal sources, it is important to know how to remediate the problem. Water is extremely invasive and very quickly causes extensive damage to your home and, without proper care, can make your property unsafe and create hazards. If you are facing any level of property damage from water, contact our professionals for an immediate response 24/7.

Protect your Property from Unexpected Storms

6/8/2022 (Permalink)

Storms strike Southern California at unexpected times, in unexpected ways. While we may not frequently face severe weather, we are certainly familiar with the occasional severe storm. When this storm hits, it is often very strong.

When these strong storms strike your Fontana home or business, it is imperative to evaluate the damages immediately. Wind, rain, hail, and lightening are all powerful forces of nature capable of producing extensive damages from debris, fallen trees, flooding, leaks, and more. These damages require an immediate response to allow the property to return to its normal function as quickly as possible.

If a property is not repaired properly following severe thunderstorms, existing damages could cause new, larger problems to spread throughout the property and create new extensive damages that are much more costly and difficult to remediate. Often, these untreated damages can be beyond repair.

Additionally, these new damages can cause structural damages that, in turn, put the safety and integrity of your property at risk.

Our professional technicians at SERVPRO of Fontana have the experience, knowledge, and equipment in storm damage remediation and water damage. If your home or business faces storm damage, call us for an immediate response.

How to Protect your Community from Wildfires

5/30/2022 (Permalink)

Fire burns through California hillside

As fires continue to spread throughout California, we are reminded of the destructive nature of raging wildfires. Many Californians have lost their homes and many, if not all, of their valuables. The climate in and around Fontana is continuing to get warmer and dryer creating conditions just right for fires to start and spread.

How you can protect your community this wildfire season:

Avoid fires and firepits during outdoor activities. Bonfires and campfires are a fun addition to summer nights, however, they can easily become dangerous without proper care. If your area does not currently have restrictions in place, burn with care. Remember to always properly put out your fire and quickly report any incidents.

Don’t flick or litter burning cigarettes. A tiny spark is enough to start a large dangerous wildfire. Remember to properly burn out cigarettes and be mindful of how you dispose of cigarettes and matches.

Report unattended fires. If at any point you come across an unattended fire large or small, always report it to your local emergency responders. While they may seem small upon discovery, if left unattended they can quickly become a massive, destructive wildfire.

Follow your local guidelines. Although it may seem unfortunate sometimes, each of these fire guidelines has been put in place for a reason - to protect the community and those who live in it. Always follow the ordinances put in place by your local officials regarding fire danger.

Be Prepared. Preparedness is invaluable when it comes to raging Southern California wildfires. Know the steps to take in protecting your family and your most important valuables. If a fire strikes your Fontana home, you need a team of experts you can rely on to clean and restore your property. We are available for 24/7 service. Contact us today.

How Professional Cleaning Can Save Your Business

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

Now that many Californians are beginning to go back into the office following the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reminded of the importance of not only disinfecting our work spaces to stop the spread of viruses, but also to halt common wear and tear that soils a shared office space.

While your janitorial staff does the regular maintenance of keeping your surfaces clean and presentable, there are many areas that are neglected. Regular deep cleaning of walls, floors, and carpets can help prevent harmful mold and bacteria from developing and creating a hazardous work environment.

It is not uncommon for commercial businesses to discover unpleasant odors or moisture and grime build ups that need professional attention. At SERVPRO of Fontana, our professionals are trained on proper cleaning and disinfecting AND identifying the source of any issues that may arise.

If any further issues arise that contribute to an unhealthy work environment or speeding up the soiling process, we will address these issues quickly and efficiently. We understand that your business needs to keep moving and will do so with little to no disruption to your workflow.

No business is exempt from our cleaning and restoration services. We service restaurants, hotels, small businesses, and more! Let’s get your property back in business.

What causes California Wildfires?

SERVPRO of Fontana responds to Fire Damage in Southern California

In Southern California, wildfire season peaks between July and November. The dry winds, lack of rain, and fall air create the perfect storm for wildfires to thrive.

As we continue through fire season in California, it is important for to know what you can do to help prevent fires and protect your home or business. Throughout 2021, California has faced another dire drought situation, forcing governor Newsom to press a state of emergency in many California counties. This late summer and early fall have continued to create dangerously dry conditions.

As of September 30, 2021 42% of the state of California was facing extreme drought conditions, while 46% was facing exceptional drought conditions. Exceptional is the worst level a drought can reach. Drought combines with rising temperatures and dry wind to evaporate water sources, dry soil, and kill trees and other plantlife. In turn, conditions for wildfires become an elevated risk and precautions must be taken by those who live and work in Southern California.

No two wildfires are the same. They have different sources, speeds, damage levels, and impacts. In Southern California the drought situation combines with other factors to start fires, while the wind contributes to spreading them throughout the dry brush once plants have died and the soil has dried.

The conditions can be right for a wildfire, but an outside factor still has to be the source. Outside factors can come from nature, such as lightning, but most of our fires are results of human error or arsen.

Many of California’s most damaging wildfires have ignited from downed power lines, sparks from car accidents or flat tires, fireworks, cigarettes, and arson. Each of these has been the source of some of the biggest fires in California’s history.

It is important that we listen to state officials and avoid any activities that may create an elevated risk of starting these wildfires that wreak havoc on our communities. If your home or business has been struck by damaging fires this wildfire season, contact us today for an immediate response at (909) 357-4337.

Hot and Dry Weather means More Southern California Fires

Fire Damage Southern California

Sierra California Fires Report

Amidst a historic drought and unusually high temperatures, the Southern Sierras are a hot spot for unruly wildfires this season. Just last Saturday, the KNP Complex fire in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park burned over 58,200 acres and was only 20% contained.

According to Cassie Adams, public information officer present at the scene of the fire, there were 659 people forced to leave their home with evacuation orders for the communities of: Big Meadows, Weston Meadows and Quail Flat in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, as well as Grant Grove, Wilsonia and Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park.

Not only do wildfires effect the people, economy and businesses nearby, but sadly nature and wildlife. As you can imagine, there is a large concern for the towering, beautiful sequoia trees in those areas as well. Officials say it will require patience and more time to predict the extent of the tree mortality due to these fires.

The Importance of Immediate Storm Damage Remediation

7/3/2021 (Permalink)

Storms and floods are alike in that they both produce extensive damages to any property, and you can’t have one without the other. During or following intense storms or heavy rain, you may find damages due to flooding, leaks, fallen trees (or other debris) and more. When your property is struck it is important to understand the seriousness of these damages and how to address them.

In Southern California, we don’t frequently see heavy rainfall or severe storms, however, when we do get these storms they are often powerful and strong. Storms can provoke a variety of damages to any home or business, putting your property at a standstill. These damages will likely force you out of your home or office until repairs are made. That’s why you need an immediate response from a team of experts trained to identify the problem and the best way to fix it.

Often, those facing water damages following storms think it is simply enough to mop the floor and let it air dry. However, this is not enough. When proper care and remediation techniques are neglected, new damages develop structurally, creating an unsafe structure and living conditions. Professional teams are trained to drain the water and remove excess moisture to protect the structure of your property and those who live (or work) there.

At SERVPRO of Fontana, we are professionals at a variety of services including storm damage/flood clean up and restoration. Our disaster recovery teams make sure that your home is safe and free of other damages, moisture challenges, and mold to get your property back to normal as quick as possible.

What Should I Do If A Hurricane Approaches

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

It’s hurricane season once again, and that means an increased risk of high winds and heavy rain – even for folks not directly in the path of these giant tropical storms. A few particularly nasty hurricanes of late have people wondering what they can do in the event of an incoming disaster.

Here are a few tips to protect your home – and your family – from an approaching hurricane:

Make a Hurricane Readiness Plan

A hurricane readiness plan is hands-down the best way to ensure safety in the event of a disaster. This is something you can plot out today, even if there’s no immediate risk of storms (in fact, that’s probably the best time to do so).

A simple guide for creating your own readiness plan is available at ready.gov. You’ll want to cover important topics like where to find shelter and which evacuation route to take, and practice your plan with the rest of the family. Ready.gov even provides PDFs of wallet-size cards that you can print out, fill out, and keep handy at all times.

Shut Off Your Home’s Electricity

Electrical wiring can easily be damaged by powerful winds and flying debris, making appliances unsafe and potentially sparking fires. If you’re in a flood-prone area this step is especially important, as pools of electrified water are incredibly dangerous.

Protect your home by turning off the electricity at the main circuit breaker, which is often located in the basement or garage (some of the first places to flood when water levels rise). You’ll generally want to leave the power off until local authorities advise that it’s safe to turn back on – better safe than sorry!

Cover Doors and Windows

Both doors and windows are extremely vulnerable to damage from wind and airborne debris, and can allow water to flood your home if breached. Plywood boards are the go-to quick-and-cheap solution, though accordion-style storm shutters are more durable if you have enough time to get them installed. You might also consider picking up some “hurricane film”: a clear plastic peel-and-stick solution that won’t provide much damage resistance but can keep glass shards from becoming deadly projectiles.

Garage doors are particularly at-risk, since they have a large surface area and are usually pretty flimsy. If you’re planning well in advance, impact-resistant steel doors are available, though they can be pricey. Otherwise, a few 2x4 boards anchored in the walls can provide some extra bracing with fairly little notice.

Stock Up on Emergency Supplies – and Consider a Shelter

Major storms can have a serious impact on infrastructure and utilities in the short-term, so you may not be able to easily pick up food, medicine, and other basic needs in the immediate aftermath of a storm.

If the weather is looking pretty serious (and especially if your area has been issued an evacuation warning), understand that there’s nothing more you can do by staying put. Head to the shelter you’ve chosen when making your readiness plan and ride out the storm in safety.

For storm damage repair, flood draining, and more, SERVPRO of Fontana is the name you can trust. Call us today at (909) 357-4337 and let us know how we can help.

If water leaks in under a door, around a window, or through the attic, you may think all you need to do is mop up as much as you can and then dry out the flooring. Often, though, this isn’t enough, especially when flooding has occurred. The water you see is usually only a portion of what has entered your home. It may have seeped under your floorboards, got behind fixtures, or has even pooled within the wall. A professional team knows how to find all of this moisture and remove it before it starts to promote mold growth or cause other issues.

Follow Cleanup with Restoration

But cleanup is really only half of the project when your home has been damaged due to storms or flooding. You also need to restore and repair anything that was destroyed or damaged. While this certainly includes the exterior sections of the house that let water in, it also involves restoring the floors, repairing water-damaged trim and woodwork, and more. General contractors may not know exactly what needs to be done to repair this damage. Instead, their instinct may be to tear it all out and start over, a costly and time-consuming process.

How Can SERVPRO of Fontana Help?

SERVPRO of Fontana is a professional storm and flood cleanup and restoration company here to help you deal with all of the issues that come after water has entered your home. Our trained professional disaster recovery teams are here to make certain your home is dry, safe, and mold-free after it’s been flooded. They can assist you in restoring any area that’s been water-damaged back to its original state, too. Contact us today if you’re in need of water cleanup and restoration.

Before and After: Residential Water Damage in CA

6/8/2021 (Permalink)

Residential Water Damage

If only homes came with manuals. Sure, there are plenty of DIY resources for tasks big and small, but even the most responsible homeowner simply can’t be prepared to handle everything life throws their way. But that’s why SERVPRO of Fontana is here: when disaster hits, we strap on our capes, and rush to the rescue!

Take a look at a couple of our most recent jobs out in San Bernardino County – and how our team saved the day:

Water Damage in Victorville

Folks in the High Desert may be used to unusual weather, but Mother Nature can’t take the blame for this mess in Victorville. A pipe had burst in the customer’s garage, affecting an adjacent bedroom. You can catch a glimpse of the waterlogged carpet and damp walls, especially in the closet area.

Unfortunately, once this kind of flooding has occurred, there’s no real way to salvage the walls or carpeting. Floodwaters can host harmful bacteria that pose a serious health risk, especially when the water has been sitting for an extended period of time. Drying out the spill isn’t enough to make the area livable – this would require some rebuilding.

SERVPRO arrived on the scene and got to work, packing out the affected areas and stripping both the carpeting and lower segments of the wall. Once the bare floor was exposed, we sanitized and dried the zone to prepare for new construction.

Of course, having your home torn apart while you’re trying to live there can be inconvenient, so our team always works as fast as can be done without sacrificing quality. This job was completed in just 4 days.

Burst Supply Line in Fontana

It’s every homeowner’s nightmare: going away for a fun-filled weekend, only to return to a flooded house. So when our customer in Fontana found just such an emergency awaiting, they called SERVPRO to the scene.

A supply line had burst in the upstairs bathroom, affecting the entire downstairs level. And since nobody had been home to catch the problem right away, the water damage was pretty significant.

We arrived on scene and started the mitigation process right away, removing the damaged sections of wall and flooring and sanitizing the affected areas. It didn’t take long at all to get the home cleared for human residence once again.

Because we have plenty of experience with this sort of thing, our team also worked with the client and her insurance carrier to get the home cleared for reconstruction as quickly as possible. Situations like this can be very trying for homeowners, so SERVPRO does everything we can to make it easier.

SERVPRO of Fontana offers 24/7 service, including all major holidays – because emergencies don’t wait for normal business hours.  For water damage restoration, mold remediation and other residential services, call us today at (909) 357-4337.

Commercial Building

Fire and water damage are two of the worst types of damage, and either one can shut your business down for days, if not weeks. Fires, floods, heavy storms, and other disasters can result in mold growth, smoke damage, and even lead to structural issues that force you to rebuild your business. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Fontana is here to assist you in restoring your business. We understand the dangers of commercial water damage and fire damage, and we’re ready to help you recover as quickly as possible.

Commercial Restoration

Our commercial restoration services focus on getting your business cleaned up and ready to reopen in as little time as possible. The longer your business is closed, the more business you’re losing. We send in a professional disaster recovery team focused on removing damage and repairing your commercial site.

Commercial Water Restoration

Water damage is one of the most insidious types of damage because it can occur inside walls or under the floor. You may have major water damage, but never know it. Our commercial and industrial restoration team is trained to search everywhere for damage and deal with it so you don’t have structural issues or mold later on. We will quickly dry out the area, remove any odors, and even clean your fabric and upholstery.

Commercial Fire Restoration

Fire damage comes in two stages: there’s the actual damage from the fire, and then there’s the lingering damage from smoke. We take care of both, plus we can clean up any water damage that occurred from putting the fire out. Dealing with smoke damage can be a long, hard fight, but we have the right tools for the job. We’ll make certain your business is restored to its former condition and doesn’t have any lingering smoke smell.

Commercial Mold Remediation

Mold will not only close down your business, but it can also make your employees and customers sick. It’s a serious issue that can occur even without a flood or any major water damage. A small leak can evolve into a huge mold problem faster than you might think. Our experienced mold remediation team will remove all mold, find the source of the leak, and restore the area to its previous condition.

Have water or fire damage? Do you suspect you need mold remediation? SERVPRO of Fontana is here to help you with all of your restoration needs. Contact us today to discuss your commercial restoration needs.

What To Do If Your Basement Has Flooded

6/3/2021 (Permalink)

What To Do If Your Basement Has Flooded

If a water spill or full-fledged flood in your basement has you panicked, you’re not alone. Despite the fact that nearly all basements are prone to flooding, many homeowners are caught off-guard when it actually happens.

Here’s what to do when disaster strikes:

1) Shut Off Power

When heading into any flooded area, the first step should be to shut off all power to the room, including electricity and gas. Ideally you’ll want to do this before even entering the room, but this isn’t always possible; in many homes, the breaker panel is located in the basement. In these cases, proceed only if there is little/no standing water remaining.

Note: if you have to stand in water at any point to access your breaker panel, DO NOT – instead, call an electrician for assistance.

2) Determine the Source of the Flooding

Your next steps will depend somewhat on where the excess water is coming from. If there has been a large-scale flood in your area, this should be pretty obvious, but a water spill can also be the result of burst pipes, radiator leaks, backed-up drains, etc. If the water appears to be coming from somewhere within your home, try to shut off the source – and call a plumber for assistance if needed.

3) Move Affected Items Out

Any personal possessions you want to save should be allowed to dry out in a warm and well-ventilated place – outdoors might be the best option, provided it’s relatively sunny out. Give your stuff a good 48 hours to thoroughly dry, but recognize that not everything can necessarily be recovered. A damp basement is very inviting to fungal growth, so don’t delay or you risk having to toss out moldy and mildewy items.

4) Call a Flood Damage Repair Specialist

Even if you’re able to clean up all of the standing water (and sometimes there’s just too much), indoor flooding poses some real long-term dangers. Excess water in your walls or under the carpet creates the perfect conditions for wild mold growth, which – combined with bacteria-rich flood waters – poses a serious health risk for you and your family. The safest course of action is to call in a water damage specialist to dry out the basement, replace rotted or compromised wall sections, and disinfect the area.

SERVPRO of Fontana is proud to be the leader in Southern California flood damage repair. We’re available 24/7 and can work with your home insurance provider – call us today at (909) 357-4337.

5 Ways to Prevent Spring Thaw Flooding

5/12/2021 (Permalink)

5 Ways to Prevent Spring Thaw Flooding

5 Ways to Prevent Spring Thaw Flooding

We don’t usually think of springtime as being stormy and wild, but it can actually bring some pretty intense weather. Heavy rains, combined with thawing snow (even from nearby mountains), carry the risk of sudden and severe flooding.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to protect your home from springtime floods:

1) Check Your Drainage Systems

All modern homes are built with water drainage in mind – but if the water has nowhere to go, it’ll back up right into your house. Check the nearby flood drains for any signs of blockages, as well as any floor drains you may have indoors (in the garage or laundry room, for instance). If your home has rooftop drains, don’t forget to take a look at those too.

2) Clear Out Your Gutters & Downspouts

Gutters and downspouts are also important parts of your drainage system – they prevent water from collecting on the roof, and route it away from the house’s foundation. And although you should check them at least a couple of times each year, it’s after autumn and winter that most blockages occur. Fallen leaves, twigs, snow, and ice chunks can all cause water to pool and seep into your home if not removed.

3) Install a Sump Pump

When water enters your basement – whether through an obvious flood or through slow leaking underground – there’s no time to waste in getting rid of it. Sump pumps protect your home by automatically activating when water is detected, and pumping it safely out of the area.

If you already have a sump pump at home, this is a great time to make sure the intake valve is clear and that the pump is working properly. You can test it by removing the lid, pouring some water into the crock, and ensuring that the device turns on and begins pumping.

4) Set Up a Water Alarm / Flood Sensor

This isn’t something a lot of people think about, but any homeowner would do well to install a water alarm, sometimes also referred to as a flood sensor. They work much like a fire alarm, alerting you immediately when unwanted water is detected in your home and before the damage can spiral out of control. These devices usually start at a very affordable $10-15 – a small price to pay for peace of mind.

5) Purchase Flood Insurance

When it comes to water damage, an ounce of prevention is worth a gallon of cure. But everyone gets caught off-guard sometimes, and having sufficient insurance makes the cure a lot easier to swallow. Make sure your home insurance policy covers flooding, especially if your home is in a flood-prone area.

For all of your water damage repair and restoration needs, contact SERVPRO of Fontana today at (909) 357-4337.

Before The Storm

- Begin preparing an emergency supply kit.

- Contact SERVPRO of Fontana for details on an (ERP) Emergency Ready Program.

- Remove dead rotting trees and branches that could fail and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.

- Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.

- Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

- Shut windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades, or curtains.

- Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

5 Tips to Keep Your Garage from Flooding

When stormy weather or snowmelts cause floods to approach your home, your garage is usually one of the first places at risk. Without preventative measures, a flooded garage can easily cause thousands of dollars in damage – or worse.

Check out a few of our top tips to keep floodwaters safely out of your garage:

1) Improve Drainage Around Your Home

While public streets are fitted with drains that usually handle any overflow, they can easily be overwhelmed in a serious flood, causing water to back up onto your property. You can take steps to improve drainage immediately around your home by installing low-key French drains that route water underground and away from the house.

2) Maintain Your Home’s Weather-Stripping

Those little strips of rubber or vinyl at the bottom of your garage door serve an important purpose: they form a seal strong enough hold against moderate water pressure, and can prevent minor floods from entering your home. But weather-stripping does wear down over time, especially as it’s exposed to the elements. Check it for cracks or other signs of damage, and be prepared to replace it regularly.

3) Have Your Foundation Inspected

Water doesn’t need a grand entryway to get into your home – even the smallest crack in a foundation will do. And a slow groundwater drip can cause real damage over time, not to mention the threat posed by a sudden flash flood. These cracks are often barely visible, so if you have any concerns about your foundation, it’s best to call in a professional to do the inspection and repairs.

4) Install Flood Vents

As tough as garage doors may look, they aren’t built to withstand pressure – and raging floodwaters pack a lot of force. Flood vents allow a controlled flow of water to pass below your home, relieving pressure and preventing serious damage from occurring. If you live in a particularly flood-prone area, these may be a smart investment.

5) Set Up Barriers

It may not be the prettiest solution, but if a flood is approaching there’s no time to waste in setting up physical bariers. Sandbags are commonly used due to their low cost and high effectiveness, but you can often find inflatable or constructed alternatives at home supply stores.

Don’t let a little bad weather ruin your garage. For water damage restoration and repair, call SERVPRO of Fontana today at (909) 357-4337

Commercial Fire Damage, What to Expect

5/11/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Call SERVPRO Of Fontana

When a commercial building suffers from fire damage, there are some similarities and differences from when a residence catches on fire. The challenges involved in dealing with commercial fire damage require the assistance of a professional such as SERVPRO of Fontana. We’re here to help you get back on your feet no matter how severe the damage!

What Types of Damage Can You Expect?

Most people assume the worst they will have to deal with is fire and smoke damage, but that’s just the beginning. Soot can get everywhere, even into areas that weren’t on fire. This can damage fragile items such as textiles or artwork. Then there’s the water and fire suppressant foam that’s used to control fires. While it’s definitely helpful in putting out the flames, it can also cause water damage. That’s not something most people think of when they consider what a fire will do to their business, but it is a concern.

What Repairs Must Be Done?

What does it take to get your business back on its feet after a fire? First, the structure has to be examined and determined to still be solid. If it’s not, you’ve got much bigger problems that may require a construction crew or, in extreme cases, a demolition crew. You might have to start over!

If that’s not the case, though, you start by calling in the professionals. SERVPRO of Fontana will begin the cleaning process by evaluating each space and determining what’s been so damaged that it should be repaired instead of replaced. Then the repairs and cleaning process begins. Here are some of the things we handle:

  • We ventilate the area to remove all of the built-up carbon monoxide.
  • We professionally clean your equipment, carpeting, and everything else to remove soot and the smoke smell.
  • We will bring in our water damage restoration experts to look at the damage caused by sprinklers and repair that damage. We’ll also check for mold growth and other issues associated with water damage.

These are just a few of the things we will do to get your commercial business repaired and restored as quickly as possible. To learn more, contact SERVPRO of Fontana us today.

6 Reasons to Consider Commercial Cleaning

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

No matter the commercial property, big or small, deep cleaning has never been more important than it is right now. Aside from the killing off of viruses, bacteria, and other infectious contaminants, professional cleaning can solve several issues that overcome your business.

Disinfection

We know that disinfection is a bit of an obvious necessity as businesses begin to reopen following COVID-19. During the pandemic, we have learned the importance of caring for the health and safety of ourselves and those around us. Certain viruses and bacteria may surpass the tools and products of your regular janitorial staff. At SERVPRO of Fontana, we offer a unique cleaning solution to protect those who work on or visit your property, so you can safely reopen and stay open.

Odor Problems

Have you discovered a strange or even disturbing odor in your business? This is not uncommon, however, it is also not an easy problem to solve without the proper skills and equipment. Professional cleaning crews have the expertise and experience to identify the odor, its source, and the best plan for removal to ensure that you no longer have to face this issue.

Walls, Doors, and Glass Cleaning

Many commercial spaces have so much space that it is common for the walls, doors, windows, etc to be neglected. Walls, doors, and windows carry a variety of contaminants that are constantly building up, creating a variety of allergens and irritants. Additionally, each of these things is frequently touched but is often forgotten about. Regularly cleaning the highs and lows of your walls and doors can create a safer, cleaner environment at your commercial property.

Floor and Carpet Cleaning

While frequent mopping and vacuuming are great, every once in a while it is important to consider the buildup of germs, allergens, and other contaminants on your tile, wood, or carpet flooring. No matter the material, sometimes your floors just need a little extra TLC. Professional cleaning services can keep your floors looking as fresh as the day they were installed while lowering the risks of allergies and irritants. Plus, appearance is everything.

Biohazard Contaminants

Biohazardous contaminants are found in commercial properties more frequently than people think. These contaminants can range in severity and risk and require professional remediation once discovered. Frequently, these contaminants can go undiscovered when disinfection has not occurred in long periods of time.

Customer Experience

When it comes to your business, the client/customer experience is a number one priority. With professional commercial cleaning services, you can rest easy knowing that your commercial property is safe and glowing.

At SERVPRO of Fontana, we offer a variety of commercial cleaning services to help your business continue to be the best it can be. Call now at (909) 357-4337.

Maintaining the Cleanliness of your Drapes

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

drapes and blinds cleaning by SERVPRO of Fontana

The cleaning of your drapes and blinds is very important for many reasons. While frequently overlooked,  it is recommended that you deep clean your drapes and blinds at least every two years. Often, soiling may not be visible for two to six years, leaving toxins and allergens inside your home or business while causing the fabric to deteriorate.

With each day that passes, your drapes and blinds are collecting a variety of airborne contaminants, such as dust, smoke, and other germs that are then accumulating and thriving in the sunlight. Without proper treatment, your drapes and blinds will likely show signs of deterioration far sooner than the lifespan they are capable of.

These airborne contaminants that sulk into your drapes hold on tight to several different types of allergens and bacteria that can influence the health of those who live or work on your property. The bacteria builds up and recycles through your air vents and throughout your home. Additionally, the fabric will likely have run-ins with bugs and trapped moisture, allowing for mold to form and expand.

Mold growth, diseases from bugs, dust, dander, and other contaminants can have mild to severe effects on your health. Taking action to clean your drapes every two years or less limits the spread and advancement of such harmful contaminants.

Are your drapes exposed to smoke or pet dander? What type of climate do you live in? Each of these can have lasting effects on your drapes. Mold growth, diseases from bugs, dust, dander, and other contaminants can have mild to severe effects on your health. Taking action to clean your drapes every two years or less limits the spread and advancement of such harmful contaminants.

Additionally, bad odors can form as a result or bacteria growth or the spreading of dust, mold, and other contaminants. Odors can easily be trapped within the fabrics that are used in drapery, creating an unfortunate environment inside of your home or business.

If you are interested in extending the life of your drapes and blinds, call SERVPRO of Fontana today. We excel at cleaning fine fabrics and intricate pieces by using wet or dry methods - whatever is required of the type of fabric. We use state-of-the-art equipment designed specifically for cleaning fine fabrics.

Fire Damage Remediation with SERVPRO of Fontana

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

2020 was an eventful year for Californians, to say the least - from the global pandemic to the domino effect that ensued after, and of course the cherry on top, our destructive wildfires that destroyed plants, animals, and acres of land. Many Californians who faced fire damage in 2020, have been forced to put off fire repair and restoration services due to lockdowns and personal circumstances. As SERVPRO of Fontana is a local company based in Southern California, we understand the importance of restoring your property as soon as possible following fire damage. As we move into a new year, we will undoubtedly find ourselves facing the fire season again in 2021.

What you need to know about Fire Damage in Southern California

  • Wildfires create more than surface-level damage
  • Wildfires (and all other fires) can create extensive cosmetic damage to your home or business. This can be extremely upsetting to find your property with destruction. In addition to the surface-level damages, you will also find that your property has extensive damage that may not be so evident to the naked eye.
Following fire damage, your home or business will need immediate repair and require time to restore the structure and integrity of the space. The air quality is not optimal for staff and residents. Smoke and other contaminants will be present in air vents and filtration and create a dangerous circumstance without proper removal techniques.

Additionally, your property will likely face water damage from firefighting efforts. This adds to the stress and disappointment following wildfires, brush fires, etc. Water damage can be extremely disruptive to your property, so it is important to take care of your water damage remediation and removal needs as soon as possible following a fire.

That's where SERVPRO of Fontana comes in.

At SERVPRO of Fontana, our goal is to serve our community in times like these. We understand that fire and water damage can be extremely upsetting and detrimental to your business - if steps are not taken to properly solve the problems that exist following natural disasters.

Our technicians are highly trained and provided with state-of-the-art technology to ensure that we have a great team who is equipped to take on all jobs — big or small. Call us for your fire damage repair and restoration needs at (909) 357-4337.

Cleaning and Decluttering for the New Year

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Wouldn’t it be nice to start the year off with a clean and decluttered home? You can, by decluttering now and getting your home sparkling clean – a great way to begin the new year and this year the new decade. Here are some tips for getting your home in tiptop shape for 2020.

Go ahead and donate those items you’ve been preparing to donate.

If you are like most people who binged on Marie Kondo's Tidying Up on Netflix, you probably obsessively purged your closet and got rid of all those nick knacks and clothes you never wear. Chances are, you probably have a bag (or two) of clothes ready to give away, as well as some boxes of kitchen items, toys, or other household items. Donating gently used items to a worthy charity’s thrift store, means not only getting your home decluttered, but also reducing waste and
possibly getting a tax deduction (tax-exempt organizations only).

Get rid of older model tablets, computers, and mobile phones.

Once you’ve upgraded, consider donating or recycling your old gadgets rather than tossing them in the trash.

Lose the unnecessary paperwork lying around your home.

You know, like those instruction manuals you’ve never opened, printouts from the doctors office (that are easily available on the office portal should you need it), old receipts and credit card statements, and such. Keep only what you need – birth certificates, car titles, social security cards, and paperwork you’ll need for your tax preparation.

Declutter your closet by ridding it of those items which no longer fit, are no longer on
trend, and you haven’t worn recently.

You’ll also want to toss stained or damaged items and pack away seasonal clothes for the winter.

Toss away items that are past their shelf life.

Start in the bathroom and get rid of over- the counter medications, old makeup and nail polish, and prescriptions medications. Remember to drop expired medication at designated collections sites for safety. Next, onto the kitchen where you will toss out expired items in the refrigerator and then the pantry (salad dressing, condiments, stale crackers and cereal, etc.). You might know, but cleaning supplies should also be tossed when they have passed their effective shelf life.

Once the decluttering is done, it’s time to clean. Since this is the busy season, it’s the perfect time to call on the SERVPRO of Fontana professionals to get the job of cleaning done for you. SERVPRO of Fontana’s team will see that your carpet, upholstery, walls, ceiling, floors, drapes and blinds are cleaned beautifully, and unwanted odors are removed successfully.

How to Keep Restaurant Floors Clean

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

How to Keep Restaurant Floors Clean

Controlling kitchen grease, especially on the floors, is critical for maintaining a safe work space and protecting your bottom line. Slips and falls can be seriously hazardous to employee health, and cost you heavily in litigation as well. That’s not even to mention the potential for significant inventory loss if food is being frequently dropped.

As most of the grime on restaurant kitchen floors is organic material, long-term build-up can pose a bio hazard risk for your cooks, dishwashers, and waitstaff. Frequent cleaning keeps this under control, and will also prevent grease (and other contaminants) from being tracked into the dining area, where customers could be impacted.

How to Clean a Restaurant Kitchen Floor in 7 Easy Steps

  1. Sweep the area clear of debris.
  2. Dilute your commercial kitchen cleaner according to the label’s instructions.
  3. Mop the floor with the diluted cleaning solution.
  4. Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, to loosen up grease and dirt.
  5. Let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes. Make sure “wet floor” signs are clearly visible, and minimize foot traffic in the area as much as possible.
  6. Rinse the floor with hot water. Use a hose if floor drains are present, otherwise a mop and a clean water bucket will work.
  7. Remove any excess water and grease/dirt. If your kitchen has floor drains, you can squeegee the remaining liquid towards them. If not, a wet vacuum will get the job done.

Commercial Restaurant Cleaning Services

Running a busy restaurant is hard work, and you don’t always have time to attend to every little spill or drip right away. When grime, moisture, and odor accumulation becomes a real challenge, turn to SERVPRO of Fontana for professional janitorial services.

Over-the-counter products are often too mild to cut through built-up layers of grease. And for effective results—in an environment where results really matter—it’s important to choose cleaning products that will specifically work for your kitchen. If your floors are made of a porous tile, for instance, cheap soaps and detergents can become trapped in the tiny holes, leaving your work space even more slippery. Commercial-grade restaurant de-greasers, selected and applied by trained professionals, are the key to success.

SERVPRO of Fontana offers commercial cleaning services for restaurants near San Bernardino. From kitchen hood de-greasing, to deep-cleaning carpets, to removing bio hazard contaminants, our technicians have the experience and knowledge to handle it all. Call (909) 357-4337 today and let us know.

California Fires 2020: What to prepare during evacuation

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

Amidst pandemic season, Orange County encountered several wildfires. In October alone, there were two recorded wildfires in Silverado and in Blue Ridge which affected massive amounts of land and people.

Silverado Wildfire

As of October 27, 2020 according to The Sun, 13,354 acres of fire with 5% contained was recorded and there were two firefighters critically injured. It has been difficult to contain this casualty because it is wind-driven, and with the gravity of the situation, they forced to evacuate 90,000 Irvine residents because the Sta. Ana winds continues to push flames toward homes. The chief said that 500 firefighters are deployed and they are moving as efficiently as they can in order to contain the fire. Overall, the fire was contained on November 7, 2020 with a good amount of damage to homes and to the area itself.

Blue Ridge Wildfire

Another fire was recorded just on the edge of Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange County engulfing 14,334 acres of land. There are no known cause as to how the fire started but it has been contained pretty much the same time as the Silverado fire.

“We’re dealing with extreme wind and erratic fire behavior, and we have two fires burning simultaneously in the county,” Orange County Fire Capt. Greg Barta said.

Wildfire Plan

Create an evacuation plan with your family and in order to do that, it should include:

  • Emergency meeting location - check for evacuation areas designated by your community.
  • Learn the escape routes inside your house and within your community. Making sure that you have the route all mapped out allows you to be more efficient in times of quick evacuation.
  • Make sure to include your pets and livestock in evacuating.
  • Establish a contact to your loved one and keep them updated on your condition and the casualty.

Also you need to prepare:

  • Always have a fire extinguisher ready at home.
  • Make sure that the family is oriented on how to act during evacuation. Turn off the things that need to be turned off.
  • Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit.
  • Maintain a list of Contact numbers.
  • Make sure to pack all the important documents and secure it with your personal belongings.

And most importantly, make sure that you always listen to the announcement from the fire department. Wildfires are unpredictable. Although in these cases, firefighters are trying to fight it before it can reach any house or any property but if worst comes to worst, do not panic. Keep a level head and keep in mind the things you need to do and move as efficiently as possible.

Why You Should Hire Professionals for Your Fire Damage Repair

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage in Cali

As a homeowner or business owner, there are few things that are worse than being hit by a fire. The damage caused by a flood or other  disasters are less when compared with the damage caused by fires.

With other forms of disasters you can still do some repair, but with a fire the damage could be total destruction, even if you are lucky enough to escape.

Even if the fire that affected you was not excessive, the damage and trouble it would cause can still be substantial.

It's also not as easy task to repair the damage. It presents some complication that make handling it rather difficult.

Why Fire Damage is Difficult to Take Care of

As mentioned, a fire causes some damage particularly tricky to address. It might only burn a portion of a room, but the repair could involve the whole home, office, or business. The smoke might also cause grime to appear on the walls and the ceiling, which could render the entire place a total mess.

Making use of ordinary cleaning methods will not work in removing the damage from the fire and the smoke. Overlooking parts of the house or commercial business which were only partially damaged by the fire can also be dangerous, since you can no longer trust their structural strength.

DIY Fire Damage Repair

Still there are those who insist they can handle the repair of the damage caused by a fire in their homes or business on their own. If you feel confident you can handle it on your own, you will need the skill and knowledge of the professionals like a SERVPRO of Fontana team member.

We can clean up your home or business in no time!

Safety is also another reason why it's beneficial for you to hire SERVPRO of Fontana professional fire damage technicians. Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Winter Preparedness

Summer is officially over - as much as we hate to admit it, and winter weather is just around the corner. Colder temperatures pose a variety of challenges for homeowners, and now is the perfect time to start preparing. Learn how to prevent fires this season and ensure you won't run into any fire or water damage.

Here are a few easy tips from SERVPRO of Fontana to winterize your home.

Have your Fireplace Inspected

Those of us who can’t stand cold winter weather can take some solace in the thought of a cozy evening by the hearth. But if it’s been many months since you last used your fireplace, it’s a good idea to inspect it beforehand and ensure that it’s safe to operate.

Check your chimney both inside and out. Shining a flashlight up can illuminate crumbling bricks or mortar, as well as any leaves or other debris that may have collected. You’ll also want to ensure that the flashing on your roof is secure, and that any tree limbs that may have grown too close to the chimney are pruned back. If your roof is difficult to access or if you have safety concerns, call in a professional to carry out the inspection (as well as any necessary repairs).

Clean out your Drain Pipes and Gutters

It’s a smart idea to clean out your gutters and drain pipes at least a couple of times per year, and this is the perfect season to do so.

Your home’s gutters and drainpipes serve an important role - guiding rain and snowmelt off the roof and a safe distance away from the foundation. During autumn, it’s not uncommon for gutters and drainpipes to become clogged, as trees start to shed leaves and twigs. This can cause water to build up and seep into your attic, walls, and/or basement, leading to expensive repairs. An hour or two spent cleaning today can save you a ton of hassle down the road.

Check your Smoke Alarms

How do you handle chilly days and freezing nights? Probably by cranking up the thermostat, boiling up some hot tea or cocoa, and pulling the old space heater out of storage.

Increased use of electrical equipment can lead to a heightened risk of fires during the winter months, so this is a great time to inspect your smoke alarms and ensure that they are working properly. Swapping out the battery periodically is easy enough, but remember that the equipment itself can degrade over time—the U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing your smoke alarms every 10 years or so.

Install a Water Alarm

Many people aren’t even aware that “water alarms” exist, but these little devices serve an important role in any house. They work similarly to a fire alarm, alerting you to the presence of unwanted moisture and giving you the chance to contain a flood before the damage becomes too serious. Install them in the more flood-prone areas of the home, like your basement or attic.

Fit your Entrances with Door Sweeps

Ever notice those little strips of rubber or plastic you’ll sometimes see attached to the bottom edge of a door? Those are called “door sweeps”, and they’re meant to help seal the entrances to your home—against both cold-weather drafts and minor flooding from melting snow or ice. Door sweeps generally cost only a few dollars, and are easy to install in minutes, making them a very cost-effective choice for any home.

As you try to recover some of your belongings, keep your hands as clean as possible, and if you do move around inside, place clean towels where you are walking through. If your electricity is off, empty your refrigerator and freezer, propping the doors open safely. Changing your HVAC filter will help the recovery as well.

If you want to get the clean up started, you can clean chrome and protect it with oil or petroleum jelly. Stop your cleaning efforts there and let the professionals complete the job. You shouldn’t attempt to clean walls or carpets or upholstery. Improper cleaning my set in stains and odors. If your appliances were close to the fire, heat, or water, you’ll want to call on the professionals for assistance and safety.

If extensive cleaning and restoration of your property is required, the SERVPRO team can even organize, pack, and move your belongings to expedite the remodeling and restoration.

Areas Commonly Missed When Disinfecting

7/25/2020 (Permalink)

Disinfecting businesses, homes, and other locations has become a key part of slowing the spread of the coronavirus. For many, however, this heightened level of cleanliness is new, and they’re not sure how to properly disinfect all areas of a store, office, or even home. There are a lot of areas that people are likely to miss if they haven’t been trained in proper disinfecting protocol. Here are a few of these areas that you may not think about disinfecting, but you should.

Light Switches

While customers in a store may not necessarily turn on lights anywhere, that doesn’t mean the switches can’t be covered with germs. Someone could sneeze nearby, plus someone has to turn the lights on and off. In the home, your family members are always turning lights on and off, so they become high contact points. Wipe the switches down regularly, even if you live alone.

Toilets

One area many people were already disinfecting was the bathroom, but during a pandemic, you need to pay extra close attention to parts of the toilet people often touch. For example, you need to be sure to wipe down the toilet seat, cover, and handle. Also, don’t forget to disinfect the sink handles, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and door handles. If your store has a water fountain outside the bathroom, the button should be cleaned often.

Doorknobs

Most people are highly aware of how many others touch the main doors in and out of a business, office, or home. Those knobs are disinfected regularly, but don’t forget about all the other doors in your office or home. All of those doorknobs need to be cleaned, too. Also, don’t forget the knobs and pulls of your kitchen and office break room. Doors to changing rooms should also be disinfected.

Similarly, businesses that have buttons that automatically open doors (such as for handicap access) need to be cleaned just as often as doorknobs do. Rotating doors need to have the handles disinfected, too.

Elevator Buttons

All of the elevator controls, both inside the car and the outside call buttons, should be wiped down regularly.

 We Can Help

It’s okay if you’re feeling overwhelmed with all of the disinfecting you need to do. That’s why SERVPRO of Fontana is here. We provide in-depth cleaning services to residents and commercial spaces. Our team is trained in CDC cleaning protocols and will hit all of these commonly missed areas and more. Any high-touch surfaces will be professionally disinfected. Contact us today to learn more.

Dangers of Commercial Water Damage

5/21/2020 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO

Water can get into your business or office in a number of different ways. Pipes can leak, heavy rains can damage the roof, strong winds can destroy windows…. No matter what leads to your water damage, when it occurs, you need an experienced commercial water damage team to handle the restoration and drying process. If you don’t, you’re leaving yourself, your employees, and your customers open to a number of different dangers. Here are some of the reasons why it’s important to call on SERVPRO of Fontana as soon as possible whenever water damage occurs.

Important Facts about Water Damage:

  • Mildew and mold can start growing in unsuspecting places. It can be hard to find some mold if you don’t know what to look for and where to check. Mold can lead to a number of different breathing issues, especially black mold. It only takes about 48 hours for mold to start growing in damp areas.
  • Water damage can also lead to structural issues. The water can seep into the foundation, walls, and floor, weakening the support structure and making the building unstable.
  • If any electrical wiring gets wet, that can lead to a number of problems. Fuses can blow, appliances can be damaged, or someone could even be electrocuted.
  • When water damage is caused by leaks or burst pipes, you may have raw sewage back up into your business. This can bring bacteria and other germs into the area and lead to illness. Having a professional clean up the area is vital in order to keep everyone safe.

If you have had water damage to your property, don’t wait to call for a professional restoration and recovery team. The longer the water sits on your floor or against your wall, the worse the damage will be. Call SERVPRO of Fontana today to handle all of your commercial water damage needs. Contact us at (909) 357-4337 or email us at SERVPRO9656@SERVPROFONTANA.COM.

SERVPRO Storm Response

SERVPRO Storm Response

Storms and floods can do a large amount of damage to your home. You may find that your entire basement becomes filled with water or that your roof has developed a huge leak. Storms can break windows and send tree limbs crashing down onto your home, resulting in major damage. Any time you’re facing such storm damage, you need a professional to assist you with cleanup and restoration.

Why Professional Cleanup Is Important

Tropical Storm Arthur will bring Strong Rains off North Carolina Coast

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Tropical Storm Arthur

Why Professional Cleanup Is Necessary during Storms

Tropical Storm Arthur is predicted to wreak havoc on many homes in North Carolina, with gusts of wind between 50-65 mph, and rains up to 5 inches.

These unnerving conditions are typical for tropical storms. Many homeowners will see their basements becoming flooded, their roof leaking in several spots, or even more severe damage from external factors - like a tree falling and crashing into power lines or even breaking a window in your home. No matter how you look at it, nature is a beautiful thing - but when it spirals out of control, it's important to have a qualified staff you can trust to restore your space.

Governor Insists People Pay Close Attention

With a little over two weeks until the official start of hurricane season, North Carolina's governor has requested that homeowners prepare for even more storms likely to hit the area. It's probably that they'll be power outages across North Carolina starting on Monday morning 5/18, and homeowners are advised to pay attention to storm warnings and prepare accordingly.

What Happens After the Storm?

After any storm, it's important to clean up your space. And in order to prevent dangerous mold from growing after water damage occurs, your property will need to undergo a rigorous restoration and repair process. It's important to have trained professionals help you, so that you can restore your home to (hopefully even better than) the original way you had it. Restoration will be necessary for the interior and exterior parts of your home. We suggest calling SERVPRO of Fontana for all your storm damage, flooding, and water damage needs. Our team of experienced professionals are trained with advanced technology to inspect your property and properly remove water quickly and efficiently - techniques that many general contractors do not have the ability or education to implement.

We are faster to any disaster. If you have any questions about water damage or storm damage, please give us a call today: (909) 357-4337

Conditions in San Bernardino County Could Be Right For Mold

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Fontana knows what to do if mold grows in your home.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Fontana to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (909) 357-4337

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.

San Bernardino County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your San Bernardino County Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Fontana will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

San Bernardino Wildfire Damage

SERVPRO of Fontana provides fire, soot and water damage restoration service in San Bernardino County

The active wildfires here in Southern California are increasing their impact as growing Santa Ana winds add fuel to these devastating blazes that are encroaching in our area. According to the New York Times, new fires broke out in Malibu on December 7, with at least 96,000 acres already burned in the Ventura area and 116,000 acres in Los Angeles County. Evacuations have closed hundreds of schools and forced 200,000 of our neighbors to seek safety. The “Thomas Fire” in the Ventura area continues to burn with the aid of strong winds. This fire has caused the closure of the 101 freeway and a boil-water advisory was issued for Ventura County. Santa Ana winds The Santa Ana winds that are enabling the fires to rapidly increase their reach can have speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. They are not expected to diminish until Friday into Saturday at the earliest. The National Weather Service has warned of “very rapid fire growth” in this area. SERVPRO Meteorologist Lela Davis said that the Santa Ana winds were already very dry when they reached the Southern California valley, allowing them to quickly pull moisture out of vegetation, increasing the risk for wildfires. For the first time ever, a purple wind warning was issued for today under the color-coded system used to advise about high winds. This purple warning pushed wind expectations from the “high” category to “extreme”. Ready to help Here at SERVPRO of Fontan we are monitoring this wildfire situation closely. Our thoughts are with those neighbors who may be put in harms’ way during this event. In many cases, a wildfire can result in a total loss for a home or business, but in others it may be a partial loss, or can result in mild smoke damage. If your home or business is affected by a wildfire, SERVPRO of Fontana is Here to Help®.

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage repair

If you’ve been the victim of a fire in your home or business, you know the devastation which comes with the experience. When the fire trucks have departed, you are left to manage the damage to your Orange County home or office. The first question is often where to begin, after all, you are facing fire and smoke damage, but also water and flooding damage from the valiant efforts of the firefighters.

Often electrical problems, wet surfaces, and other damage can create hazards for you and your family.

Be careful!

Take care and limit movements in areas with the most damage as you can further set soot into your carpet and upholstered furnishings. If you need to walk around, place towels over rugs, upholstery, and carpeting. If your electricity is off, you’ll want to empty the refrigerator and freezer and prop the doors open. You can also take the time to wipe off your indoor plants, change your HVAC filter, and attach double layers of cheesecloth to air handler vents.

Let us take care of the cleaning

There are also steps you should leave up to the SERVPRO of Fontana professionals. Don’t wash walls or other painted surfaces, or attempt to clean your carpet or upholstery. Let SERVPRO of Fontana get the job done right for you! You’ll also want to avoid turning on appliances, lighting, or ceiling fixtures until you are certain wiring has not been damaged. Your SERVPRO of Fontana professionals are ready to respond quickly following a fire, which can limit further damage and reduce your restoration costs. Serve Up a Romantic Valentine’s Day with Commercial Kitchen Cleaning

2/11/2020 (Permalink)

Clean Kitchen

This Valentine’s Day, your customers are relying on you for a wonderful dining experience—one that ties together their romantic evening. If you want to pull that off, a little preparation is required, and it all starts with professional cleaning services.

Here are just a few reasons to consider commercial kitchen cleaning from SERVPRO of Fontana:

Save Time

Running a busy restaurant is hard work. It’s one thing to help out the kitchen staff with the occasional mop-up or countertop wipe-down, but you probably struggle to fit a deep cleaning into your packed schedule. And since commercial kitchens see some pretty heavy activity, those cleanings are needed on a regular basis.

Professional restaurant cleaning from SERVPRO of Fontana gets the job done right, freeing you up to focus on what you do best—like providing an unforgettable Valentine’s Day dining experience that’ll keep your customers coming back time and time again.

Stay Up-to-Code

Poor sanitation is one of the most common restaurant health code violations. Even if your kitchen has no obvious spills or old foodstuff lying around, grease and dirt can lurk unseen under (or inside) major appliances, and in rarely-used nooks and crannies. What’s more, this buildup of organic material can pose a fire hazard, putting you in violation of fire department codes as well.

Frequent attention is key. And a surface-level approach just doesn’t cut it—cleaning commercial kitchens requires commercial-strength cleaning products and an understanding of how commercial equipment is put together. It’s not all floors and countertops: our service professionals will disassemble kitchen hoods and other major appliances for a deep clean of the individual parts, before reassembling and ensuring everything is in perfect working order.

Promote Health and Safety

Nothing ruins a romantic night out faster than feeling sick. And as reputable as your restaurant may be, an insufficiently-cleaned kitchen is going to cause illness in a customer at some point or another. What’s more, unclean working conditions put your employees at risk of slipping on grease or breathing in unhealthy fumes. Even a mild incident behind-the-scenes could leave you understaffed on a traditionally busy evening.

Romantic dinners are meant to be memorable—do your best to ensure that those memories of your restaurant are positive ones! A botched Valentine’s Day dinner won’t soon be forgotten.

SERVPRO of Fontana offers commercial restaurant cleaning services in San Bernardino County. From kitchen hood degreasing, to biohazard decontamination, to carpet deep-cleaning, our technicians have the skills and experience to handle it all. Call today at (909) 357-4337 today, and let us know how we can help.

Cleaning and Decluttering for the New Year

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

Organized room

How to Keep Commercial Restaurant Floors Clean

12/18/2019 (Permalink)

Call (909) 357-4337 today and let us know

The Types of Mold in Your Home and Their Health Impact

7/16/2019 (Permalink)

Photo by Michael Schiffer on Unsplash

Everyone has heard a mold story, telling a tale of how mold occurred in someone’s home and the difficulty they had in removing it successfully. Many people hear the stories and conclude that mold only strikes in older homes. The fact is mold can occur in any home, regardless of age, and is a result of mold spores. Of course, not all mold is harmful, at least not at first, but when left untreated, mold can be quite dangerous in your home.

Common Molds in Homes

While some homeowners will never have a mold problem, mold can be unavoidable. This is a list of the most common types of mold and the health risks they present when not treated quickly and effectively.

  • Alternaria is a common mold that can be found inside and out in damp areas. Alternaria causes allergy symptoms and asthma attacks.
  • Aspergillus is another common mold found inside homes which causes allergic reactions and respiratory infections.
  • Cladosporium is the mold found in carpets, wood floors and cabinets, and aging fabrics. Cladosporium results in breathing difficulty and recurring respiratory issues.
  • Penicillium often occurs after water damage to insulation, furniture, carpets, and more. It spreads quickly and easily and can cause sinus infections, allergy flare-ups, and inflammation of the lungs.
  • Stachybotrys, also known as black or toxic mold, creates mycotoxins which cause asthma attacks, breathing issues, depression, fatigue, sinus infections, and more. It grows in damp areas and can be detected by its musty smell.

Mold Prevention & Treatment

The most successful treatment for mold is prevention. Since mold often results when water damage occurs or when surfaces regularly get wet and aren’t dried and cleaned properly. Preventing mold can be as simple as drying out areas which are damp, cleaning carpets, floors, and walls regularly, and fixing any leaks. When buying a home, it’s important to have a home inspection to ensure there is no mold growth.

Should you find mold is an issue in your home, call on the professionals, like the ones at SERVPRO to eradicate the problem. After the mold issue is taken care of, remember to keep damp areas clean and dry and consider adding a quality air purifier to your home to help remove mold spores and avoid future mold problems.

Storms can strike anywhere and anytime, leaving a wake of devastation in their path. Storms not only leave destruction from high winds, fallen trees, and flying debris but often result in flooding as well. When storm damage strikes unexpectedly, calling on a professional, experienced storm cleanup team like SERVPRO can help you manage the damage regardless of its size. Our team provides 24/7 emergency services delivered by highly trained professionals.

First things first

Fast response time means reduced damage and costs, and limits the potential for further damage. In many storm situations, water damage is of great concern. Water is invasive, spreading quickly and soaking into walls, floors, and furniture causing damage often in just hours. With professional water extraction mold, mildew, rust, corrosion, and biohazard contamination can be prevented. Without it, restoration time and costs increase, as does the potential for contamination and structural damage.

Too much work to do? No Worries!

A professional, well-trained clean-up team who are experts in water damage and storm restoration will help you quickly get your life back to normal following water damage. Whether the storm damage affected your home or office, SERVPRO of Fontana has the training, experience, and equipment necessary to manage storm damage, perform restoration, and properly clean your property.

A professional storm damage restoration team has all the resources needed to handle storm and disaster damage on your behalf. Many storms and the damage that follows occur with little warning, but when you call on an expert team like SERVPRO of Fontana, help will be on the way quickly, saving you from additional damage and dangerous situations. While you await the help you have called, be sure those who were in the damaged property are safe, avoiding electrical and slip hazards occurring as a result of the storm. Also remember: never attempt to use your household vacuum to remove water and never use your household appliances or electronics in the presence of storm or water damage.

With an experienced team on your side, like the SERVPRO professionals, storm and water damage, as well as clean-up, can be managed easily and expertly, successfully restoring your property to its pre-storm appearance.

Because mold spores live everywhere – inside your home or office and outside as well - removing ALL mold from your property is virtually impossible. The truth is these troublesome spores are microscopic, floating along on the air, entering your home or business when you open doors and windows, through your heating and cooling systems, and even coming in on people and pets.

Mold in Your Home

When mold spores arrive in your home or business they seek out damp, moist spaces in which to thrive. Thus mold growth (spores growing into colonies) begins quickly, manifesting within only 48 hours. You’ll know when mold is there, because even if you don’t see it, you’ll smell the strong, musty odor it emits. These bothersome mold colonies can produce allergens and irritants which result in health concerns for those living in your home and those working in your company.

Mold Removal in Fontana CA

Complete mold removal is impossible, so when companies “guarantee” to remove all mold, their claims are false.

On the other hand, mold remediation is quite possible. Mold remediation is a process focused on reducing mold levels in your home or business back to natural levels. And while each mold problem is unique and will require a customized plan for your home or office, the steps to remediation are similar in all cases. Step one is contacting a trusted mold remediation specialist like SERVPRO. In step two, an inspection and assessment is performed. This is followed by steps three and four and includes mold containment and air filtration. Steps five and six feature removal of mold-infested material and mold, followed by the cleaning of all the property’s contents.

The process is completed in step seven, the restoration of your property. The restoration process includes repairing the mold damaged areas including, but not limited to, replacement of drywall, subflooring, carpeting, as well as painting, and any reconstruction needed depending on the severity of the damage caused by the mold.

4 Ways To Protect Your Garage From Springtime Flooding

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

Flood Fontata CA

Springtime tends to bring rainy weather. Combine that with warm temperatures that melt snowdrifts (in your area, and on nearby mountains), and you’ve got a recipe for plenty of excess water. Rivers are more likely to spill their banks in the spring, and higher-than-normal groundwater levels can cause leaks into your garage/basement that you aren’t even able to detect beforehand.

That’s why spring is the perfect time to take steps towards protecting your garage from flooding. Here are a few of our top tips:

1) Replace Your Weather-Stripping

Weather-stripping is the process of sealing openings (like doors and windows) against the elements. In your garage, you’ll probably see it in the form of rubber strips at the bottom of your doors. When intact, they form a seal strong enough to keep moderate water flow from entering your garage. But as weather-stripping will wear down over time, it’s important to check it periodically for cracks or other signs of damage, and to replace it if needed. Don’t worry – it’s an easy and inexpensive task.

2) Ensure Your Home Has Adequate Drainage

Public streets (and even many private ones) have gutters and drains that are your home’s first defense against heavy waters. But they aren’t infallible, and during times of particularly heavy flooding they may overflow and allow water to back up onto your property – particularly risky if the nearby land slopes downwards toward your home. If you don’t have something similar already, consider having a French drain installed to route water safely away from your garage.

3) Install Flood Vents

If drainage is lacking around your home, flood vents are one easy and efficient way to alleviate the problem. They allow any water that has entered your garage to drain in a safe and controlled fashion. While their effectiveness will be limited against a massive flash flood, homeowners who frequently contend with a relatively small amount of water in the garage will find flood vents a smart investment.

4) Lay Down Flood Barriers

Low-level floods can be kept at bay by physical barriers. Sandbags are common and inexpensive option, though their weight can pose a challenge without the proper equipment. Inflatable flood barriers (or “quick dams”), which rapidly expand when they make contact with water, are also available from home supply stores. It’s important to note that you don’t generally want to completely barricade your property – this can result in water pooling between buildings and causing additional damage. Rather, set up a pyramid-shaped wall near the flood zone to divert the moving waters away from your home as much as possible.

How to Protect Your Home from Spring Thaw Flooding

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

Protect your home from Flooding

Winter is coming to an end. Time to get outside and throw away those cold-weather blues! But unfortunately for homeowners, it’s not all fun in the sun. Especially with all the rain in Southern California!

The arrival of spring has brought heavy rains and rapid snowmelt, and together they pose the risk of sudden and severe flooding. Even if you live somewhere warm – like San Bernardino County – the snow melting off of nearby mountains can raise local water levels. And we’re not just talking about rivers dramatically spilling over their banks: pooling water and elevated groundwater levels are enough to damage your lawn or flood your basement.

As a homeowner, early spring is the ideal time to take protective measures against flooding. Here are a few quick and simple steps you can take today that will save you a real headache down the road.

Inspect Your Drainage System

Most homes are built with water drainage in mind, and feature ways to route that excess water away from your foundation. These often include outdoor flood drains, but may also include indoor drains (especially in the garage, mudroom, or any other area where water is likely to enter).

Drainage systems are great, but they run the risk of clogging up with leaves, twigs, and other debris. If that happens, the water will have nowhere to go and will just backup right onto your property. Take a few minutes to visit the drainage sites around your home and ensure that they still allow water to flow freely through. If not, see if you can clear the blockage yourself, or call in a professional for assistance.

Clean Out Your Gutters

Similarly, the gutters and downspouts lining your roof are an important part of your home’s drainage system. Their goal is to catch rainwater and route it away from your home. And of course, they’re quite prone to clogging – especially after the autumn and winter months, when leaves and twigs fall from nearby trees en masse. If that happens, rainwater will just pool alongside your home and is likely to penetrate the foundation.

Cleaning your gutters and downspouts may be a relatively easy (though dirty) task, or quite the hassle. It really depends on your home’s height, how easy it is for you to access the roof, the shape of the building, and other factors. Either way, it’s well worth doing at least once or twice per year, so call in the home-cleaning service professionals for assistance.

Install a Water Alarm

Not everybody knows that water alarms (also called flood sensors) exist, but as water damage restoration professionals, we’d recommend them to just about every homeowner. These little devices work similarly to a fire alarm, in that they will alert you immediately to the presence of water and give you a chance of containing the damage before it spirals out of control. Install one in your basement and in any other subterranean rooms – water alarms typically start at only $10-$15 each, and have the potential to save you thousands of dollars down the road.

For flood damage restoration and other home/commercial services, SERVPRO of Fontana is the name you can trust. Call us today at (909) 357-4337, and let us know how we can help.

Resolve to Eliminate Mold in Your Home this Year

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

Mold in Orange County

While it may be a new year, that doesn’t mean all of the troubles from last year are gone. If your home has a mold problem, that issue is going to continue to plague you until you look into home mold remediation services. If you suspect you still have mold in your home, this is the year to resolve to get rid of it!

What Causes Mold?

The mold in your home can be caused by a number of different issues, and you’ll need to address this underlying cause after you’ve had the mold removed. In some cases, a minor leak in your plumbing is the cause. In other cases, it may be something more involved like a leak in your roof or flooding from a storm. Any time you have moisture in your home, mold spores can begin to multiply and grow. If you don’t deal with the cause at the same time you have the mold removed, it’s only going to return.

Why Deal with Mold Now?

You may be wondering why you should deal with mold now if you haven’t done so before. The bottom line is that mold is dangerous to your health. You should never put off having remediation services come in and clear the mold from your home. Otherwise, it may impact your breathing, make your allergies worse, cause damage to your home, and more.

If you have mold in your home, make it your New Year’s resolution to have it treated. The longer you put it off, the larger the problem will become and the bigger the impact it will have on your health. Don’t try to remove mold yourself—without the right equipment and training, it’s impossible to find all of the mold or dispose of it correctly.

Call SERVPRO of Fontana today to schedule your mold remediation.

Protect Your Business in the New Year by Creating a Disaster Recovery Plan

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

Recovery Plan SERVPRO

Do you have a disaster recovery plan for your business? If you don’t, you may have no idea what to do when a fire damages your business or when a flood causes extensive water damage. If you don’t have at least an outline of what steps to take when a disaster hits, you may lose valuable time and money. Having a disaster recovery plan in place will help you focus on what needs to be done, plus it provides instructions to your employees and managers in case you’re not available when the disaster happens.

What Should Your Plan Include?

A disaster recovery plan is a document that outlines what to do in the event of a major problem that’s going to shut down your business. It needs to cover a wide number of problems, including the following:

  • Fire and smoke damage
  • Flooding and water damage
  • Mold
  • Storm damage, including flooding, hurricanes, and tornaadoes
  • Earthquake damage, if you’re in an area that sees frequent earthquakes
  • Cyber-attacks, including the loss of customer’s private financial information

These are common issues, but you should also outline responses to less common problems that affect your local area.

What Do You Address?

For each different type of issue, you need to create a response plan that addresses all of these questions:

  • What should you/your employees do immediately after the event?
  • If the event happens while the business is open, how will you protect your customers and employees who are in the building?
  • What services do you contact to begin the repair process?
  • How will you finance these repairs and pay your employees if you have to close your business for days or weeks?
  • What sort of public statement will you make? You can even draft statements for some of the more common issues or create templates to fill in.
  • If your business has to close for weeks or months, how will you continue to generate income? Will you be able to work from a temporary office, from home, or from another location?

These are just a few of the questions you need to ask. You also need to have all of the contact information on hand for SERVPRO of Fontana. Our commercial services include water, fire, and storm damage repair as well as mold remediation and disaster recovery. Contact us at (909) 357-4337 or email us at SERVPRO9656@SERVPROfontana.com to learn more about how we can help your business get back on its feet after a disaster.

We will quickly dry out the area, remove any odors, and even clean your fabric and upholstery.

Commercial Fire Restoration

We take care of both, plus we can clean up any water damage that occurred from putting the fire out. Dealing with smoke damage can be a long, hard fight, but we have the right tools for the job. We’ll make certain your business is restored to its former condition and doesn’t have any lingering smoke smell.

Commercial Mold Remediation

Mold will not only close down your business, but it can also make your employees and customers sick. It’s a serious issue that can occur even without a flood or any major water damage. Dealing with Fire Damage in Southern California

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage in Fontana, CA

California, especially Southern California, has recently been hit with a number of major fires. These raging wildfires aren’t the first the state has had to deal with, and they likely won’t be the last. Since the beginning of 2018, there have been 4,587 separate fires raging across the state, which is only slightly above the average for the past five years. More than 600,000 acres have been affected. A number of people have been killed in these fires, including civilians and firefighters, and thousands of residential and commercial buildings have burned. In addition to those who have lost their homes, thousands of other residents have had to leave their houses due to the proximity of the fires. Some of these blazes still aren’t contained and continue to threaten people’s homes.

The Dangers of Fire Damage

Even if it doesn’t destroy your home, fire damage can seriously impact your property and your health. Fire damage can weaken the structure of your home, making it more susceptible to damage from earthquakes or other disasters. When firefighters put out the fire, the water from their high pressure water hoses can also cause water damage to your home, leading to mold growth and other issues.

Even if there’s no major structural damage from the fire, you may still have smoke damage. Smoke can cling to carpets and walls, leaving your home with an odor for months. It can discolor paint, flooring, and furniture, make asthma and other breathing conditions worse, and leave everything you own smelling like smoke. It’s not something you can simply live with—it’s something you need to have professionally cleaned.

What SERVPRO of Fontana Can Do for You

As a professional cleaning company, SERVPRO of Fontana is here to help you deal with fire, smoke, and water damage. We have the tools and experience needed to deal with any fire or smoke damage, no matter how horrible it is. We will assist you in removing soot, cleaning your floors and possessions so that they’re usable again. We can assess the damage and let you know what isn’t salvageable plus temporarily board up any holes or tarp your roof until you can have your home properly repaired.

Don’t assume a quick carpet cleaning and a fresh coat of paint is all it takes to get rid of smoke damage. This is a bigger issue that does require professionals to handle.

Contact us today for more information about our fire and smoke cleaning services or to make an appointment.

Commercial Fire Damage, What to Expect

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Orange County, Call SERVPRO of Fontana

SERVPRO of Fontana: Biohazard Cleaning Services

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

When a home has been flooded due to a sewer backup, has had hazardous chemicals spilled within, or has been the site of a hoarding situation, it’s often not be safe to live in. The chemical residue can linger for months, if not years. These chemical fumes, bacteria, and other biological wastes can lead to a number of issues, including breathing difficulties and other health problems. That’s when a professional biohazard cleaning company is needed.

The DIY Approach Often Isn’t Enough

No matter how hard you scrub or clean, using home cleaning products simply isn’t enough in most cases. These products are usually designed to clean small spills or deal with mild hazards. They aren’t available in the quantity or strength needed to fully disinfect homes that have been flooded or that have been the site of a crime. Most people also don’t know how to fully clean and disinfect a major hazardous waste site. There are many small areas where waste can hide or bacteria can breed. A professional knows where these areas are and how to properly clean them. This can lead to mold growth and other hazards hiding away in the home.

What SERVPRO of Fontana Provides

We offer professional biohazard cleaning services to residents and businesses in Fontana, California, and the surrounding areas. Our team is more than just a cleaning service—all of our professionals are trained in how to deal with major chemical and waste spills. This includes following all state and federal guidelines for cleaning up drugs, chemicals, and blood. All of these types of waste can be extremely dangerous. We follow all OSHA and health regulations when cleaning every site.

In addition to handling biohazard cleanup, our team can provide services such as odor removal, graffiti removal, commercial cleaning, floor cleaning, upholstery and carpet cleaning, and HVAC cleaning. Contact us today to learn more about these services and how SERVPRO of Fontana can help you.

SERVPRO of Fontana Staff - demo in Colton, CA

Natural disaster or honest accident (i.e. stove or faucet left on), it only takes one incident to leave your house or commercial building damaged. In some cases, quick-fix repairs or a simple cleanup won’t do the job, and residents and business owners may benefit from demolition. Not sure how demolition works? Here’s a sneak peek into the demo process and how the SERVPRO Fontana team gets the job done.

Suspect fire damage, flood damage, or mold? Call our team at SERVPRO of Fontana for immediate assistance: 909-357-4337

Demo in Colton CA: The Inside Scoop

Before the team starts demoing, we survey the building and structure, and assess several factors: building location (such as Colton CA), building materials, construction method, presence of hazardous material, building condition, demo purpose, and debris disposal, to name a few.

Based on our analysis, we’ll then decide which demolition method will deliver the best results. Some demolition techniques include implosion, high reach arm, crane and ball, and strip-out. To make the demo go as smoothly as possible, we remove any hazardous materials like asbestos and radioactive contaminants, illustrate a detailed demo plan, and prep the area and building.

Safety is Always #1 for Demo in Colton CA

Safety is top priority for SERVPRO Fontana. Which is why our team only wears the most effective gear and uses top-notch equipment to minimize heat stress, dust and chemical exposure. Not to mention, we remove all flammable materials beforehand and have fire equipment on site ready to put out any impromptu flame immediately. Following the demo plan, we gut the building, tearing down all structures. We then remove the demolished materials and clean up the site. A demolition job well done.

The Takeaway: Demo in Colton CA

No matter the method, the main goal when it comes to demolition is tear down the residential or commercial building efficiently and safely to facilitate reuse or redevelopment. Having proudly served local Southern California locations like Colton CA and Sierra Lakes CA for years, you can count on our team’s expertise to handle your demo needs.

Not only does every member of our team have IIRC training and employee certification training but initial franchise training, e-Learnings, and continuing education classes as well. Have a demo project? Does your structure need storm damage restoration or fire damage restoration?

Lilac Fires in San Diego

3/6/2018 (Permalink)

Lilac Fire San Diego

You might remember the Lilac Fire – one of many wildfires that popped up in Southern California at the end of last year, and one of the largest (with about 4,100 acres burned and 10,000+ people displaced).

After the fire was contained, SERVPRO of Fontana’s team of fire damage restoration professionals spent 5 weeks out in the San Diego area, working on residential fire damage claims. Even after the immediate danger of a wildfire has passed, affected homeowners still need to move quickly in order to clean up any damage from smoke and/or flames and make the home safe to live in once again.

The aftermath of a wildfire can be a really taxing time for homeowners. That's why SERVPRO of Fontana aims to take as much off of your plate as possible. We're available 24/7 and respond immediately – because in emergency situations, any amount of waiting will cause damages (and cleanup costs) to rise exponentially.

What To Do When Wildfires Approach

Climatologists are warning that wildfires may be the new normal in large parts of California. Do you have a readiness plan in place for your household? Ready.gov provides simple guides to help you and your family prepare for disaster events, covering basic wildfire info as well as topics like where to find shelter and which evacuation route to take.

When disaster actually approaches, the safest thing you can do is to evacuate the area with your loved ones: there’s nothing you can do by staying put. Head to the shelter you’ve identified when preparing your readiness plan, and only return to your home when the “all-clear” is given.

If your home suffers fire damage – whether from a wildfire or any other source – professional restoration is your best bet. It’s not safe to live in a house whose structural integrity may have become compromised, nor is it any fun to deal with the smell of smoke caked into your walls and carpets for years on end. Check out our fire damage tips, where we cover the basics of what to do and what not to do after fire and/or smoke events.

SERVPRO of Fontana offers 24/7 service, including all major holidays – because emergencies don’t wait for normal business hours.  For fire damage restoration, storm damage cleanup and other residential or commercial services, call us today at (909) 357-4337.

Before and After: Residential Water Damage in CA

1/15/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage in San Bernardino

Home ownership is one of the many joys we get to experience in life. It is the physical representation of owning something, claiming it as our own, and a staple of showing consistency, a state of permanency, and stability.  As much as the joys of home ownership are apparent, there also comes the stress and worry when something happens in our homes. Whether it is something minor like the air conditioning going out (which isn’t minor in Southern California, but maybe to others), or something major like a slab leak, it is always best to prepare you when things do happen.  Most homes tend not to have slab leaks but when they do it is necessary to take immediate action to diverge extreme damage to your home and yourself. What is a slab leak you may ask? A slab leak is a pumping leakage found either in or below the concrete layer of your home. Here are some signs you have a slab leak in your home:

1. A sudden, and unexplained spike in your water bill

You’ve noticed an increase of your water bill even when it is out of season for the bill to be so high. This is an early sign since you could have constant water flow from a leak.

2. Water pooling where it shouldn’t

When you have a leak, water will begin to accumulate under your foundation until it finds a way to escape. The most prominent area would be shown outside of your home, the house would look like it’s leaking.

3. Damp carpet and warp hard flooring has suddenly appeared

The water accumulate underneath may not have anywhere to go, so will begin to bubble under your carpet or hard flooring.

4. Mold or mildew has appeared, either visibility or a smell

With an access of water in one location with dry materials, mold will eventually appear under your carpet or floor. You may not be able to see it, but you will smell it.

5. You have a decrease it water pressure

Constant water is flowing in your house, so when you turn on a faucet there will be less water than usual for your daily shower or washing the dishes.

6. The hot water heater is constantly running

The equivalent of leaving the hot water running in your home 24/7, which will result in having less hot water for daily necessity and life.

7. Your floor has become hot in certain areas.

With all the water hanging out under your floors, you will notice random hot spots moving from one room to the next. With nowhere to go, the pressure will build causing the water to trap, and create heat.

Has all these things happened in your home? Maybe one or two of them has happened, but you are getting considered about it. You recognize that you may have a slab leak based on the following signs. You need to take immediate action to prevent further damage to your home. Do not wait.  Calling in a professional is necessary to look at the damage and determine what it takes to repair the mess causes by your slap leak. Once they have accessed the damage, they can begin to making your house feel like home again.

Preparing Your House For Winter Weather: 5 Things You Can Do Today

9/14/2017 (Permalink)

As fans of HBO already know, “winter is coming” – and with it comes a whole new set of weather-related challenges. If you’re not ready when the temperatures drop and the snow starts falling, you could be in for a rough (and possibly expensive) time. Fortunately, a little preventive action goes a long way.

Start winterizing your home today with these quick tips:

1. Clean Out Your Gutters/Drainpipes

Gutters and drainpipes are meant to gather water from your roof and route it safely away from your home’s foundation. Ideally, you should be cleaning these at least once or twice per year, and autumn is the perfect time to do so.

As trees start shedding leaves and twigs, they tend to collect in your gutters and drainpipes and cause blockages. This may result in water building up and seeping into your walls, attic, and/or basement – which can lead to expensive repairs. And the problem becomes even worse when cold weather rolls in and that water starts to freeze into pipe-blocking chunks of ice. Spend an hour or so on cleanup today, and save yourself a world of hassle later.

2. Check Your Smoke Alarms

When it gets cold outside, we tend to crank up the thermostat and pull the space heaters out of storage. As comfy as that can be, it means the risk of heating equipment fires does increase during winter.

Take a few minutes to go around your home and inspect your smoke and CO2 alarms, ensuring that they’re each functioning properly and replacing the batteries as needed. Continue checking these every month or so throughout the winter season, and remember that the U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing your smoke alarms entirely every 10 years.

3. Install a Door Sweep

A door sweep is a simple strip of flexible rubber or plastic that attaches to the lower edge of your (outside-facing) doors. For only a few dollars and a few minutes of your time, these can help seal the entrances to your home and stop cold-weather drafts from entering. They also provide a small amount of protection against minor winter flooding from outdoors, which is often caused by snowmelt and can be aggravated by road salt and other deicers (if you live in an area where these are present).

4. Set Up A Water Alarm

Another way to combat the risk of winter (or spring-thaw) flooding is by installing a water alarm in your home. These little-known devices are surprisingly inexpensive, and function much like a fire alarm: they quickly alert you to the presence of unwanted moisture and give you a chance to stop the problem before it spirals out of control. Place them in the most flood-prone areas of the house, especially ones where you don’t spend a lot of time and won’t necessarily see the water yourself – the basement and attic are perfect examples.

5. Have Your Fireplace Inspected

Even if you prefer the warm summer months to the chill of winter, the chance to get cozy by your fireplace again is probably a silver lining. But before you do so, it’s important to run a quick check-up, especially if you haven’t used it for many months.

Shine a flashlight up the chimney and keep an eye out for any signs of cracking bricks, crumbling mortar, or built-up debris. Check it from the outside, too, ensuring that your roof’s flashing is secure and that there are no new tree branches or other fire hazards close to the home. If you’re unsure of anything, or if it’s tricky to get up on your roof safely, you can always call in a professional for a quick inspection and possible repairs.

When you need to repair damage caused by water, fire, storms, and more, SERVPRO of Fontana is the name Californians trust most. Call us today at (909) 357-4337 and let us know how we can help.

What is “Black Water”?

9/14/2017 (Permalink)

It’s true that flooding is a major risk for homeowners all over the US, but not all floodwaters are created equal. These waters may be loaded with biological waste that poses a serious health risk – even if it’s not immediately obvious. This is what flood damage repair specialists call “black water”.

Black water is particularly dangerous because the effects can linger long after the visible liquid has dried up. Here’s what you need to know as a homeowner:

Where Does Black Water Come From?

Not all flooding involves black water, but it’s more common than you might expect.

When speaking about water damage, flood cleanup professionals use three distinct categories:

  • Category 1 Water: this refers to relatively clean water that is unlikely to pose any real threat – aside from annoyance – to you or other residents. Examples could include an overflowing tub, or a leaky supply pipe underneath the sink.
  • Category 2 Water: aka “gray water”, this describes water with a significant amount of microorganisms and other contaminants – enough to cause illness if consumed or sometimes even just through exposure. Examples might include discharge from your washing machine, or small amounts of groundwater leaking through the basement foundation.
  • Category 3 Water: aka “black water”, this is grossly unsanitary runoff that’s heavy with contaminants. Weather-related flooding is very likely to consist of black water, as sewage systems back up and combine with overflowing rivers/streams to shift around huge amounts of organic material. Gray water that’s been allowed to stand and pool can quickly turn into black water as well.

As a rule of thumb, any water entering your home directly from the outdoors is likely to contain some level of contaminant – and could either be classified as black water, or could quickly become black water without prompt attention. Any sewage/toilet backflow would also be considered black water, regardless of its visible color/content.

How to Get Rid of Black Water

Once black water has entered your house or apartment, these microscopic contaminants will settle and linger in affected areas – walls, floors, furniture, etc. Mopping up the mess simply isn’t enough to sterilize the home.

Your best bet, by far, is to call in the professionals. Safely cleaning up black water usually requires sections of walls and flooring to be replaced, while furniture may or may not be salvageable (depending mostly on what it’s made out of, and how long the water has been present). There’s no sense in delaying – it’s dangerous to even be inside a contaminated home without protective gear.

For black water removal and flood damage repair, SERVPRO of Fontana is the name Californians trust. Contact us today at (909) 357-4337 – we’re available 24/7 for emergency cleanup services.

What to Do If Your Basement Has Flooded

8/9/2017 (Permalink)

How to Tell if Your Home has a Mold Problem

6/22/2017 (Permalink)

Discover How to Detect Mold

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare: a mold colony that quickly spreads throughout the house. Not only can mold cause structural damage and lower your home’s value, but exposure to this fungus can also be a serious health risk – especially for people who have a mold allergy.

If you suspect that there’s mold in your home, don’t delay. Some of the most common warning signs include:

Moisture Buildup

Water leaks and condensation problems aren’t direct symptoms of a mold infestation, but they do create a very inviting environment for spores to grow. Mold flourishes in damp areas, and you’d be shocked at how quickly it can appear – we often see early signs of growth within 24-48 hours of a flood.

Musty Odor

Since mold grows best in damp, dark spaces (ultraviolet light is harmful to it), it will often start to form within walls, behind major appliances, and in other out-of-the-way places. A pungent, musty smell is often one of the first indicators that it has entered your home. If this happens, you’ll definitely want to call a mold removal company before the problem spreads any further.

Visible Patches of Mold

Even visible areas can harbor mold growth, especially if they’re quite humid or the site of a recent water damage event. Spotting out-in-the-open mold usually isn’t too difficult. It tends to form scattered, fuzzy clumps on walls, floors, and ceilings. Household molds may range in color from white to gray-green to black (depending on species).

How to Fight Winter Mold Growth

6/22/2017 (Permalink)

How to Fight Winter Mold

Mold grows surprisingly well in the winter – at least indoors. As we insulate our homes and crank up the heat, we’re also trapping moisture and increasing the humidity. This creates the perfect environment for this nasty fungus to take root – but you don’t have to let it.

Here are a few of our top tips for fighting winter mold growth:

Keep Humidity in Check

If there’s enough moisture in the air, mold can thrive even without a clear source of liquid water. Humidity indoors often spikes in the winter months, but you can control things a bit by placing one or more dehumidifiers throughout the house. These are especially effective in kitchens and bathrooms, where there tend to be higher local humidity levels.

Inspect Your Roof, Gutters, and Downspouts

Your roof, gutters, and downspouts are an important drainage system. They do more than just keep the rain off your head – they’re designed to funnel that water away from your home’s foundation and basement.

Problem is, autumn and winter debris (like twigs, leaves, and chunks of ice) can block up your gutters and downspouts. This can cause rainwater and snowmelt to back up into your home, or to drip down and erode the foundation. Ensure your drainage systems work properly all winter long by checking for blockages and clearing them out.

Clean and Vacuum Regularly

Frequent vacuuming and quickly drying up spilled water becomes even more important in the winter months. Pay attention to your basement and bathrooms in particular, as well as the area around the doors to outside.

With winters often full of snow and mud, you and your family/houseguests are likely to accidentally track debris inside, so be sure to keep your entryways especially clean. Even small amounts can serve as food for mold, and a damp, poorly lit area might as well be a welcome mat (which, by the way, you’ll want to wash as well).

5 Tips to Keep Your Garage from Flooding

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

For water damage restoration and repair, call SERVPRO of Fontana today at (909) 357-4337.

5 Ways to Prevent Spring Thaw Flooding

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

Flood Damage Repair in Anaheim Hills

5/8/2017 (Permalink)

This shows how we stripped out the damaged carpeting and affected areas of the wall.

Remember all the rainfall Southern California got back in January? These storms were so severe that they caused flooding in some areas – which brought us out to Anaheim Hills for one of our latest jobs.

The customer called up SERVPRO of Fontana to report heavy water damage to their house. Time was of the essence on this job, as the property was in escrow and the homeowner was (understandably) dreading the prospect of delays.

Our team arrived on scene to survey the damage. The January rainstorms had left the backyard flooded, and the water had entered the home, where it pooled in the recessed family room.

Not only was the carpeting soaked through, but the walls had also absorbed a lot of moisture. Floodwater can carry all sorts of harmful contaminants, including deadly bacteria and viruses – and if it’s allowed to settle, it can cause structural damage and invites mold to take root. In order to make the home safe again, the affected wood and carpeting would need to be replaced, and fast.

We quickly got to work at the source of the issue, containing and draining the water remaining in the yard. Even though the rains had passed and further flooding was unlikely, standing water still poses a structural risk to the house, as it can infiltrate the foundation and sheetrock.

Once the scene was contained, we stripped out the damaged carpeting and affected areas of the wall, and began using heavy-duty air movers to dry out the area. While the home dried, our technicians inspected it for mold and other harmful microbes. We needed to treat these with disinfectants before the house would be safe to live in once again.

Thanks to fast action and our expert team of water cleanup professionals, SERVPRO saved the day. Within just 5 days, the loss work was completed and the home was ready for repairs – and the owner was able to complete the property sale without any delays.

For water damage cleanup and restoration from the name you can trust, turn to SERVPRO of Fontana. Contact us today and let us know how we can help.

What is dry ice blasting?

2/3/2016 (Permalink)

Dry ice blasting is a revolutionary blasting method that uses dry ice pellets (CO2 in solid form) as the blasting material. The process is very enviromentally friendly and provides a fast and effective alternative to traditional methods of cleaning industrial prouction equipment.

Dry ice blasting is a 3 step process:

- Kinetic- when dry ice pellets are accelerated in jet of compressed air and strike a surface at the speed of sound, they crack and loosen the coating of the surface being treated.

- Thermal- The low temperature of dry ice pellets (-79C/-100F) makes the coating brittle, cracks it and loosens it. This allows dry ice to permeate the coating.

- Sublimation- dry ice penetrates the coating and immediately sublimes (passes directly from solid to vapor state) This results in 700- fold increase in volume, an explosive effect that lifts the coating off the surface.

Deodorization Equipment

2/2/2016 (Permalink)

- Ultra low volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that easily penetrates sites where odor-causing residues accumlate. The device can also be used to apply fungicides and disinfectants.

- Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products in large volume, dense fogs suitable for confined areas. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that pair with and neutralize odor-causing particles.

Floods Strike Everywhere

1/26/2016 (Permalink)

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the U.S. Whether you live near a coastline , along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage. In fact, nearly 25% of last year's claims paid by the National Flood insurance program (NFIP) were for policies in moderate to low-Risk Communities. According to the NFIP, houses in the U.S. have 26% chance of being damaged by a flood during the course of a 30- year mortgage, while businesses face similar risks by flooding. On average, floods cost $6 billion in annual losses in the U.S. The following are a few more little-known flood facts:

- Floods kill an average of 140 people per year in the U.S. making flooding the most deadly natural disaster.

- More than half of all fatalities during floods are auto are related, often the result of drivers misjudging the depth of water on a road and being swept away in a swiftly moving current.

- The principle causes of floods in the eastern U.S. are hurricanes and storms.

- The principle cause of floods in the western U.S. are snowmelt and rainstorms.

- Underpasses can be some of the most dangerous places during a flash flood - especially at night, when it's difficult to see.

Psychrometrics

12/30/2015 (Permalink)

Psychromrtrics is the study of the air and its properties. The properties of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure and dew point are measured to evaluate air conditions in the structure, enabling a SERVPRO professional to create the proper atmosphere for more efficient drying.

Water can damage materials in two ways: first, by absorption through direct contact with water; and second, absorption of moisture from the air. Measuring the moisture content of the air is critical to the drying process.

Restoration professionals must establish an enviorment favorable for drying. The restoration professional must also understand how to manipulate temperature and humidity levels to produce optimum drying conditions, without causing secondary damages through improper drying processes.

Air Moving Equipment

12/17/2015 (Permalink)

Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level, thereby reducing dry time. As airflow at the surface level increases, the moisture in the air increases. The moisture is then eliminated via the use of dehumidification equipment.

Depending on the amount of soot, SERVPRO may even be able to reduce the cost of recovery by cleaning lighter soot deposits found on some surfaces, eliminating the expense incurred with painting or refinishing. Dehumidification Equipment

12/4/2015 (Permalink)

By extracting water vapor from the air, dehumidifiers lower the relative humidity, which in turn increases the rate of evaporation. In a water damaged structure, dehumidifiers pull in the moist, humid air then discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials. SERVPRO Franchise professionals use two types of dehumidifiers.

** Refrigerant dehumidifiers - work similarly to air conditioners.

** Desiccant Dehumidifiers - use chemicals called desiccants that readily absorb moisture from the air.

Water damage documentation

11/25/2015 (Permalink)

If at some point you experience a water damage claim, one of the first things you should focus on is documentation. We encourage our clients to take extensive documentation for several reason.

If proper documentation isn't taken, your insurance carrier may be hesitant to offer you the appropriate payouts that are necessary to cover the costs of the damages. Proper documentation increases the likelihood that you get reimbursed the right amount from the insurance carrier.

Before any mitigation services begin, first document all activity from beginning to end. Be sure to put together a comprehensive list of all damaged property such as personal items and structural. In addition, explain in detail the extent of the damage. Include as many photographs and recorded videos as possible.

The second aspect of the documentation process is to gather all paper documentation such as receipts, serial numbers, models, and brand names related to those damaged items.

By following these steps, you will have the proper documentation to present to your insurance carrier to get paid the proper payouts.
